NNTP gateway to forums?

NNTP gateway to forums?

Is anyone working on an NNTP gateway to the forum discussions?

About half of my students still use dialup modem connections to access the Internet, and very few of them have multiple telephone lines, so they tend to prefer to dial in, upload and download mail and news, disconnect, and then read and respond to mail and news off-line.

Moodle forums can be viewed off-line via e-mail subscription, but this does not allow off-line posting of replies. A good NNTP interface would solve this problem.

Perhaps my situation is exacerbated by the fact that my students are already used to using real NNTP newsgroups. I am trying to migrate them to Moodle, and this is by far the most common and significant complaint that I have received...

We are currently evaluating Moodle.  An NNTP gateway for the forums would be a big help to us as well - in our case, its the professors who are participating in the evaluation who see it as a need.

Any new news on this?

This is very crucial to our adaptation of moodle for our e-learning project. Would be glad if someone can find a solution to this.

We have instructors who would really appreciate this feature. Our current community bulletin boards have an NNTP back-end, so this would be very helpful.

There was, at one point, reported to be a means of replying to forum posts by Email under development. Sadly, that function seems to have quietly dropped from the list.

However, an NNTP back-end might be a better solution. But both pose a similar challenge to implement.

This is an old issue, but I'm interested in finding a solution.

NNTP (news) and e-mail gateway is still important and useful protocols in many contexts. (offline reading, local storage / classification of the reference material / aggregation / faster to read and write content in a local client / bredre knowledge exchange / and lots of Other ..... ++++)

Does anyone have any information about the work that is done in this field?

Where are the pitfalls of implementing a NNTP and e-mail gatway?

Which forums to NNTP or e-mail gateways do you know?

Do you have any experience with these?

Are you satisfied with how they work?

I hope to gather some facts on this subject as the start of a wiki page.

Would you like to contribute? (Code, test, implement, document, spread the word + +)
