Mini-case assessment (each question is timed & student can't return to an earlier question)

The following link shows one way to implemented a timed mini-case assessment which is commonly used in medical education. Each question is timed and the student can't return to an earlier question.

It was implemented as a series of quizes each of which was only available when the previous one was marked and completed. Each quiz contained two questions: the first was a multiple choice question worth 0.01 points and the second was an essay question worth 0 points. The multiple choice question had both alteratives marked as 100% and it allowed Moodle to mark the quiz and thus allow the next quiz to become available. If the student did not pick one of the other they were given 0 for this question but that still counts as a final grade so the next question becomes available.

To mark the minicase the teacher changes the value of the essay question to the real value e.g. 10 points and then the question can be marked in the nomal way. Because the multiple choice question is worth only 0.01 and the number of decimals shown in the activity is 1 it effectively becomes a zero and does not affect the result.

Hi there. I thought your video was really clear and I am going to take a look at all the links at the end; thanks very much. What I don't quite understand though  is - and perhaps this is due to the nature of the requirement for the  mini-case assessment -why you can't simply use the "Sequential" navigation method in the Quiz settings http://docs.moodle.org/24/en/Quiz_settings  (available since Moodle 2.3) Is it because each individual question has to be answered within a certain time, so they have to be done in individual quizzes?

I was not aware of sequential navigation through a quiz which is almost exactly what we wanted.  Thanks for pointing this out.

We would prefer timing the answer to individual questions but having a time lmit for the whole quiz works as well.

And the BIG question is: why did we use multiple quizzes to get the behaviour we want rather than use sequential questions within a single quiz?

And the answer is: the university I work for is using Moodle 2.2 and thus far  there is no public statement of when they might upgrade to a more current version.  I note that Moodle HQ support for serious security fixes for 2.2. ends July 2013 http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Releases#Moodle_2.2
