IMS Content Package LMS Compatibility

IMS Content Package LMS Compatibility

Hi,

There is little information or discussion on the exportimscp feature and what I do see refers only to using it to move books from one Moodle course to another.

My question is if the IMS content package created by exportimscp can be imported to another (IMS-compatible but not Moodle) LMS?

Seems to me that if it really generates an IMS package according to the standard is should.

I have many very simple books (with embedded Flash files) that need to be created in standard format (my client's requirement) so they are usable (sellable) by other major LMSs.  I can create them nicely in Moodle (and prefer to author there as Moodle will continue to be the main LMS) and would like to avoid additionally regenerating them in an external authoring package.

I'd appreciate any input or suggestions.

Thanks,

Heidi

Hi Heidi

Yes, you can export book as IMSCP and as IMS is a standard format, you are able to import in any LMS that support IMSCP

When you export book as IMS Moodle generate a zip file

Beware that teachers only be able to export  their book if admin allow the teacher role to do this

Doing this is a great Book's goodness ;)

Kind regards

Hi Maryel,

Thanks for taking the time to reply.  After I posted this I tried exporting a simple book and validating it with imsglobal common cartridge validator.

http://validator.imsglobal.org/index.jsp?validate=manifest

Unfortunately, I don't have access to any other LMS for testing this.  I logged many errors of missing files and began to think that maybe the content package Moodle generates is not a complete solution.

Glad to hear that I am wrong.  Can you tell me if you have direct experience with this and if yes - to which systems you were able to upload?  Must they be specifically IMS compliant or is it sufficient to be SCORM compliant?  Sorry for all the questions but I'm new to this aspect.

Thanks,

Heidi
