Creating Private Forums

I have tried many ways to create a Private Forum for individual students.  No matter what I try, students are able to access each others' Private Forums.  Is what I am trying to do impossible?

Welcome to Moodle Ken.  You have one of the shortest times between join and post I have seen.

Another alternative is to install ForumNG, and use the 'Study advice' forum type.

Aughh!!  Yes, Ken - Tim is right.  If you can do plugins, this is a good option.

Try here: https://moodle.org/plugins/pluginversions.php?plugin=mod_forumng

It is a little tricky to find the latest version.  The latest news is at the bottom of this page: http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-34144  it is sort of working with 2.3.

Unfortunately, we are currently operating on Moodle 1.9. I`m looking for a system where students can submit essays (I teach AP English) online, I can read them, evaluate them, create a PDF of their graded paper, and then post it back. What I don`t want is every student to have access to all the Forums. It seems like this would be something (A private communication area capable of attaching documents) that should be in an online environment.

Ken. If you want a private area where students can submit work to you, you grade it and send it back - look at the assignment module and in particular the advanced uploading of files assignment. This is all totally private to each student and when you have looked at their work you also get a browse box to upload back to them your response.

I like your suggestion, Mary.  But now I wonder what Ken is really trying to accomplish.  For example, does he want private conversations between any two students, or private conversations with the teacher.

As another alternative, why not simply email?  This is private.

Maybe Ken can tell us more.

What I would like is to have a mechanism that allows for the private exchange of attached documents. Email , journals, assignments -- none of these allow me to send privately a graded essay saved as a PDF.

Actually yes Ken -if you mean teacher to student contact then the advanced uploading of files  assignment type will allow you to send privately a graded essay saved as pdf.

Hi Ken,

I think I am getting lost by what you are trying to achieve and what you are saying:

Emails - not allowing for a private exchange of attached documents??? Surely that is exactly what an email allows you to do?

But even sticking within Moodle - the ability for a student to upload a document (Word/PDF or any other format), the tutor to grade and return it, would seem to be (as Mary C has already said) exactly what the Assignment module is set up to do??

Perhaps if you have a more explicit/specific detailed requirement that this does not meet you could explain that more fully so we can try to help you better.

Richard

Wonderful!  I just messed around with the Advanced Upload of Files and was able to do exactly what I wanted (thanks to the old video).  Thank you.
