My Files - Confusion

Hello,

I am a little bit confused about the handling of files in moodle 2.X.

I know that there is the block "My Files". I created and uploaded some files using the moodle1 way - "add a resource" -> file. The uploaded file appears with no errors but is not listed in "My Files". Do only files I upload in this block appear there? Where can I find the course-files that are used in a course.
