I've looked around and I'm pretty sure this can't be done but always good to double check these things.
I know you can create groups by importing a list of group names but is it possible to import users into those (or pre-existing) groups by uploading a csv file with the users in?

Alas, no. I guess the reason for not implementing this is the thought that course managers would not find it particularly practical to upload group members from csv as this would require them to somehow make a list of user ids for members of each group which would not be easy without some ui. Hacking the groups import to add members from csv that contains user ids shouldn't be too difficult.

We have a general area for our postgraduate students and was hoping to find an easy way to group them by subject area. We have that kind of information from our own system and was hoping we'd be able to essentially link them up by download/copying spreadsheets but guess not.

What you're trying to do is what I've asked for for all the students in our dept, so interested to hear if you can!
