I can author a quiz in HotPotatoes, but does anyone know of a tutorial that gets questions in to Moodle?

I can't seem to find one, maybe it's too easy. Anyway, links/answers would be grafefully recieved.

Hi Faruq,

We need a little more information before we can answer:

  • Are you on Moodle 1.9 or Moodle 2?
  • Do you want your quiz to appear in Moodle as a Hot Potatoes Quiz or do you want to import the questions from Hot Potatoes into the native Moodle module called Quiz? Both are possible.

Cheers,

Glenys

Hi Faruq,

This is what Gordon wrote:

Re: Hot Potatoes in Moodle 2.1.1+ 12 October 2011, 01:31 AM

(I found it by doing a Google search for "Hot Potatoes for Moodle 2")

The HotPot module is not included in the standard install of Moodle 2.x.

You need to install it "by hand" like this:

  1. downloadthe zip file containing the HotPot module for Moodle 2.x
  2. when you unzip the file you will find the following two folders:
    • hotpot
put this folder within the "mod" folder on your Moodle web server
    • question
this folder contains a folder called "format", which contains a folder called "hotpot". Put this "hotpot" folder within the "question/format" folder on your Moodle web server
  3. login to Moodle as a Moodle administrator and the installation of the HotPot module should commence. If not, navigate to Settings -> Site administration -> Notifications

Cheers,

Glenys

PS: For Gordon, why can't I find the Hot Potatoes module in the Moodle Plugins Directory?

Hi Glenys and Faruq,
the instructions Glenys found need to be modified a bit reflect the some recent changes I made to the folder structure within the downloadable HotPot zip file.

Here are the most recent instructions to install the HotPot module for Moodle 2.x:

  1. Download and install Hot Potatoes software on your PC
  2. Create Hot Potatoes exercise on your PC
  3. Install HotPot module on your Moodle site
    1. download from http://bateson.kanazawa-gu.ac.jp/moodle/zip/moodle-20.hotpot-module.zip
    2. unzip file - creates folder called "moodle-20.hotpot-module"
    3. upload subfolderfolders of "moodle-20.hotpot-module"
      • mod/hotpot
upload this to "mod/hotpot" on your Moodle site
      • question/format/hotpot
upload this to "question/format/hotpot" on your Moodle site
  4. Add HotPot activity to your Moodle course
    1. Login to Moodle, and navigate to a course page
    2. Enable "Edit mode" on course page
    3. Locate course topic/week where you wish to add the Hot Potatoes exercise
    4. select "HotPot" from "Add an activity" menu
    5. Next to "Source file name" click "Add" button
    6. Click "Upload a file", then "Browse" to the Hot Potatoes file on your PC
    7. Click "Upload this file"
    8. review other settings
    9. click "Save changes" at bottom of page

good luck !
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

I've copied the above instructions into the Moodle docs here: http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Adding/editing_a_hotpot

"Adding/editing a hotpot" no longer seemed an appropriate title, but I couldn't work out how to change it.

Please check I've done things right.

Cheers,

Glenys

I have managed to import the HotPot mudule as Gordon said. It worked perfectly in showing the HP quiz in Moodle.

However, I cannot import any HP questions into the Moodle Quiz.

In Settings: Quiz Administration: Question Bank: Import   I got File Formats for Aiken Format to WebCT Format, but no Hot Potatoes format.

What am I doing wrong?

I have been able to do it in Moodle 1.9, but it seems to be different in Moodle 2.

Sorry Michael - there was a bug. It has been fixed now, so please download the latest HotPot for Moodle 2.x scripts and try again.

Thanks Gordon.

I have done that and it seems to be working fine. It will save me a lot of time. I was dreading copying and pasting a lot of quizzes.
