Is it possible to use (modify) the database activity to use an independent DB? 

Let me describe my case for this.  I am the faculty advisor for our NHS chapter.  I would like ot use the data base for tracking student service hours.  Students are inducted as Juniors.   So each year I have both junoirs and seniors recording service.  My reluctance to using the stock database activity is that each class adds about 3000 records a year, so 6000 new records each year.  I am a bit concerned with how that could affect the moodle database.   I think that being able to backup/restore and report from a separate database would be preferable.

I don't think 6000 records should be a serious issue, and not even when considering that with the standard database module this number would be multiplied by the number of fields whether or not they have content.

The Dataplus plugin may be an alternative. I'm not involved with this project and haven't tried it so I don't know how and how well it works.
