smtp authentication error moodle 2.1

smtp authentication error moodle 2.1

Posting this problem again as I can't seem to find any definite answers to the problem.  Email settings are exactly the same in new installation of Moodle 2.1 as they are in an older 1.9 installation.  Email works fine in 1.9 but the following error is received in 2.1 (and emails not sent):

SMTP Error: Could not authenticate. ERROR: SMTP Error: Could not authenticate

Has anyone managed to solve the problem yet?

This is currently holding up our migration to the new version as without it our users will be unable to click to receive a new password (we have not been able to migrate passwords from 1.9 with users and are also having issues binding ldap settings).

Cheers for any help.

Is *anything* different between your 1.9 and 2.1 installations? Are you saying that they are on the same machine with the same IP address and everything?

Have you checked the logs of the smtp server to see why it is not authenticating.

It's unlikely to be Moodle per se - it's much more likely to be some difference between the two installations.

Have you specified the correct Host (and username/password if necessary) under Site administration / Server / Email?

What kind of mail server is it?

I just posted this on the Wiki. It will help anyone who arrives here like I did looking for a solution to what might be ONE of your SMTP issues.

If you're hosting Moodle 2.2 on a new linux install, mainly RHEL 6 then the below article is for you.
