Flash module add-on: Probe Your Unconcious Mind : 'Test of Unconcious Identification' Moodle module

I've released a 'Test of Unconcious Identification' Moodle module under a GPL license. I was commisioned to develope this by Timothy Takemoto and it is built to his specification.

The Test of Unconcious Identification is a psychological test. Tests of this kind are really big in psychology right now. This module was inspired by the 'Implicit Association Test' of Anthony Greenwald and Associates of Harvard University.

Intention of the The Test of Unconcious Identification in a Nutshell : For years psychologists have been asking people to respond to written questionnaires but the problem is that questionnaire responses are filtered by the conscious mind of the subject. Measuring and comparing reaction times as we do in the Test of Unconcious Identification we can tap into the subjects unconcious. We bypass the conscious filter of the subjects. Implicit Associations Tests are like lie detectors. They can even tell you what you do not know yourself. For example, do I like Japan more than the UK? If I'm not sure how I really feel I can take an implicit association test and find out my real feelings about this.

There is a more thorough explanation of the test in the TUI documentation also available on my site.

You can see various examples of tests, and some documentation on how to make your own tests written by Timothy Takemoto, on my 'Test Drive' site. Also you can find the GPL licensed module code available for download on the same site and a course backup which includes all the example tests which you can restore on your site after having installed the software. This Module is tested on Moodle versions 1.4.3 to 1.5 developement version and works fine. It should also work on older versions of Moodle.

There are some grammatical mistakes in the tests and the documentation still needs a little work but the module works well and the test examples should give you an idea of what can be done with the module.

Thanks Jamie,

I will advertise among psychologists. I think that they will like it. In any event I am very satisfied. Jamie is a great programmer.

The name of this module probably demonstrates an unconscious preference. After considerable discussion we settled upon TUI after considering a large number of alternatives, since it sounded like a nice name. It was ony afterwards that we remembered that Tui happens to be the name of Martin's daughter. I hope that is okay.

This really is big in psychology right now so I recommend that people have a play.

I just tried your module in Moodle 1.5.2+ as well as 1.4.4+ with the same result:

Could not add a new instance of tui

I select TUI from the activities popup, change nothing and click the save changes button. What gives? I downloaded it from moodle.org today, so it is the newest version.

By the way, I took the meat-vegie test on jamiep.org and it went through it all the way but at the end I got:

Analysis of your (guest user) results from Meat or Veg?
No results found.

Yes. I get that too on Moodle 1.5.1 and moodle 1.5.2. It was working on 1.5 unstable and 1.4.3. I am not sure if that is an incompatability with newer versions of Moodle, or whether Jamie has made an improvement that introduced a bug.

I think that Jamie is busy with other things right now, so it may be some time. I see you are a programmer, Robert. I would be grateful of course if you would be so kind as to look into the source of the error усмивка

TUI fix for 'Could not add a new instance of tui' and 'No Results' after taking test

от Jamie Pratt -
I found the cause of the two problems Robert was having.

Attached are some files that can be used to replace the files in what was the latest release of the tui module (unzip the package in your mod directory and it will put the files in the right place). I committed these changes to the CVS so the tui module available from Moodle.org will be fixed tommorrow.

This is a excellent module..

But I have a few questions as well...

How do u delete the test results?

and how can we have more that 2 reply options?

One more question...

Have you seen the Personality Test at tickle.com, or testcafe.com?? Ne idea how to make those kinda quizes in moodle so that they give u the results like the way these websites give??

You can't delete test results without deleting the activity from your course.

Why would you want to?

You can have more than 2 test options if you know how to program a Flash app or can persuade someone to do some programming for you. All the source is there to modify as you wish.

I can see the list getting a bit long as a few hundred students take it? Is the number of past tests shown configurable?

In reply to Michael Penney

Re: Kewl Work

от Timothy Takemoto -
If I get a few hundred students taking my test I will be jumping for joy. I don't think that it worries me too much that all the results are displayed. It is only the administrator that sees all the results.

I don't mind all the results being there but I guess the "take the test" link could go at the top above the results, so that if there is a lot, and the admin wants to check the test, then they do not have to wait while all the results download.

I am thinking of adding a few improvements to this module.

I like the idea of adding another category but... hmm...I will have a think about it. It would make things pretty complicated. And I guess complicated would mean that people are more likely to make the sort of mistakes that lets their subconscious show.

I do hope some more people try it.

A link to do the test above the results would indeed be a good idea.

It also would be a nice idea to paginate the results. I guess for a site with a lot of users the listing of results for the Guest User will be rather long as well as the list of all rsults that the admin can see.

Hi Jamie and Tim,
I have tried the TUIs on your test-website and am very impressed. Unfortunately it is not possible to install the backup on my own sites and play with it further.
In Moodle 1.4.3 and 1.5dev I get an error message about an invalid or corrupt back-up file (see screenshot). Tim's course can be installed, but without the TUIs. There are some *.jpg-files in it, but no TUIs. So I can only read the nice explanations.
What can I do?
Thanks for your help

Hi Karin,

Before you restore the course back up to your site you need to install the TUI module. You need to upload the php scripts to mod/tui/ and to lang/en/ and then go to your admin page so that the TUI databse tables can be set up.

If you don't do this then the TUI activities in the course back up will be ignored.

Have you done this?

I'm not sure why you got the error message.

I have indeed installed the tui-mod before restoring the backupfiles. The TUI works as long as there are no pictures involved. However pictures as stimuli does NOT work. I've understood that the pictures i suppose to be in some "coursefilesfolder" (at least they are referred to that in the .xml code that defines the tests). I don't understand where to put the .jpg-files in order for the tests to work!

To put files in the course files folder you go to your course which the TUI is in. When you are logged in as an admin or teacher then you can click on files in the administration menu and upload the images there.

Have you read the documentation available from http://jamiep.org make sure your jpg are not progressive jpgs as Flash cannot handle these and will not display them.

Why didn't installing the TUI work?

The proper method to delete a module is from the main site page to go to :

  • Configuration->Modules and click on delete next to the module that you want to delete.
  • This will remove all references to the module from the db. Then delete the whole directory mod/modname/

Just in case anyone is confused the Test of Unconcious Identification is not part of the Flash Activity Module and the Flash part of it is using a slightly different xml based method to communicate with Moodle.

It is a Flash based activity though so this forum seems a fairly appropriate place to discuss it.

Thanks for all the help. However i have another question. Is it possible to get TUI working with diffrent languages? More specificially i want it to work in swedish so that the stimuli and the instructions can use swedish characters. As of now they're just replaced by a square. Maybe this has to do with moodle? I can get the rest of moodle to work in swedish but not the tui-module. I'm not used to moodle so please bare with me усмивка

Another question, wich i mailed earlier to you, is if it is possible to get ALL the data and not just the mean? If i got all the data then i could take the median and find out the variance etc. More importantly i could figure out the internal consitency - i.e does the subjects differ diffrently on diffrent stimuli. That way i can find out if a certain stimuli isn't probing the right catetgory.

Swedish should be no problem. I have some in Japanese on my site.
http://nihonbunka.com/moodle
Flash works with UTF8 but not with EUC-JP encodings of Japanese. Perhaps it depends upon the encoding. Is there only one encoding for Swedish? With Jamies FLASH module it is possible to embed the fonts need to produce any language so that it does not matter what languages are install on the client computer. Jamie is moving now, I believe, but as soon as he gets settled in this will be an easy

I hope it is possible to get all the data. That was certainly one of the program specs. I think that if you download the cvs (comma seperated variables) file from the top of the results page then all the data should be in there.

If you are interested in cultural comparison then I can get my students to do your tests. I am trying to get social psychologists in Asia interested in using the TUI.

Embedding fonts would allow users who do not have Swedish or Japanese fonts installed on their computer to be able to view the Swedish or Japanese anyway. I could add font embedding capabilities to TUI2 if someone wants to fork out some money for this, this would not take too long, does anyone have 50 dollars to spare?

You can use any language with the TUI.

However Flash expects to be fed data as UTF-8 (utf-8 is a character encoding system where we can represent characters in nearly any language). I would recommend that you change to a Swedish UTF-8 language pack if one is available. If there is not one available then it is fairly easy to make one, although I'm not going to go into doing that.

Alternatively you can force the page on which you enter data for the TUI to use UTF-8. On the form page you should go to your browsers view menu and there will be a menu item 'Character Encoding' or something like that, choose UTF-8. Every time you enter data in this page choose UTF-8 this should force the page to be UTF-8 and form data to be submitted as UTF-8.

It would be possible to translate between older character encoding formats and UTF-8 before and after passing data to and from Flash but this would require several hours of work at least. SInce Moodle will eventually switch over entirely to UTF-8 I'm not sure whether we should leave things as they are.

I have another question as well. I can't use more then 20 stimuli per block! Once i go above that the program skips the 21th stimlui and finishes after that particular block!  And another ting  - is it possible to make it so that each stimuli is showed more then one time for longer tests? Specifically i would like to have 3-4 times longer tests and shorter practice sessions.

Also the module always compares the first block that you've selected with the 5th block. Even if i chose first block as "4" and second as "7" it still will compare the fourth with the fifth. This means that I can't add more practice blocks!

Re: Flash module add-on: Probe Your Unconcious Mind : 'Test of Unconcious Identification' Moodle module

от Timothy Takemoto -

Hello Rickard Carlsson

Glad to here that someone is using TUI. I did not know about the limit of 20 stimuli. I will ask Jamie to remove it in TUI2 which will be coming out by the end of this month apparently. TUI2 will enable subjects to input their own stimuli, in words and pictures, and perhaps even to publish these for other users to take.

In order to make the stimuli appear more than once you would need to simply add them into the list more than once. I am sure that Jamie would add this functionality for not many dollars.

I am not sure that it is comparing with the 5th block. It may just say that it is comparing with the 5th block in the language file of the results screen. You might want to check that out.

от Rickard Carlsson -

I just can't thank you enough! It do was possble to get all the results through downloading the cvs or .xls for that matter. And the test did compare the right blocks altough it specified wrong.

As for language in flash i don't know much about what your talking about усмивка I have no experience with flash what so ever. But do you mean that i should inbed the fonts in the .swf file somehow trough som flash editor?

The problem with few stimuli and shorts blocks can now also be easily solved when i can get all data - just add more test blocks!

It would indeed be great if you would use the test on your students in Japan. My test design is correlational and i comparing the results of an perfectionism scale with the results in the TUI. My hypothesis is that perfectionists will be more prejudiced against obese people - because they'll associate it with failure and their valance for failure is more negative the more perfectionists they are.

In reply to Rickard Carlsson

Re: Flash module add-on: Probe Your Unconcious Mind : 'Test of Unconcious Identification' Moodle module

от Timothy Takemoto -

Yeah!

It is possible to embed the fonts in the .swf file but TUI should work without doing that, and indeed I dont think that TUI1 (TUI2 is comng soon) has the capability to embed fonts. It could be done but I think that there is a more simple solution. I used Japanese in my presentation today without a hitch. When Jamie is back online (he may be now, but if not it is because he is moving) he will be able to sort out the langauage problem.

I think I can get subjects for your test. Please have your students take mine.

Strange. Are you sure there are no errors in your xml? It could be that an error is causing the rest of the stimuli to be ignored.

I don't recall any reason why stimuli per block would be limited to a certain no.

Great work on the new version!

от Rickard Carlsson -

Been a while since I last checked on TUI. I'd like to point out that i truly admire your work in the latest version. Many of the problems that used to be have been adressed! Great work! I belive TUI is a great alternative to commerical software - especially for small universities.

However i have one question. As I've understood the amount of used stimuli in each block is the double amount of stimuli entered in the script. I also understand that the stimuli is presented using an random algorithm. The only problem is that sometimes the same stimuli is shown twice in a row. I belive this can greatly impair respons times as the subject belives he has missed a key or something's wrong. This was indeed a problem when i use the old version in my research. Especially when using many stimuli of the same typ (e.g. 5 pictures but shown 40 times) this becomes quite a problem. Is there some workaround for this?

I know this may seem a minor problem. One could argue that it's most easily fixed by having more stimuli. But think about it. If one is to have pretty long blocks in the practice blocks when the negative-postive are to switch place to eleminate block-order bias it can really become a problem.

In reply to Rickard Carlsson

Re: Great work on the new version!

от Timothy Takemoto -

This is quite a problem.

Perhaps one could
1) Have the stimuli appear only once as opposed to twice (this should be hackable) so that assuming
1.1) there are one of each stimulity in each block
1.2) There are the same number of stimulin in each category
then there would be no repeats.

2) Do clever things in the code to ensure that there are no repeats.  However, if there is only one stimuli in any category then either it repeats or the subject knows that the two categories will be displayed alternately. I guess that this functionality might turn itself on if there are more than one stimuli in each category.

3) There is some visual hint of the fact that the stimuli has been represented, such as adding a slight offset of a random length before each stimuli so that their postion jiggles.

4) Remove or radically reduce the significance of all responses times that are longer than a certain amount of time. I think that I would be inclidned to do that anyway. perhaps even Harvard are doing that.

Have you seen the harvard site? I think that, as they demostrate there, the prejudice tests are good. Why is it that even blacks find it easier to associate postive words with whites, and postitive words with whites? It shows the existance of a an unconscious attitude or prejudice that many deny that they have, because they are unaware of it.

thanks timothy. actually tui works with 1.5.

i got some quite annoying problem. sometimes (and I have no idea why) the uit does wrong categorizations. so if the user presses the right key he anyway gets a "wrong. try again" message and tui simply jumps to the next stimulus. so different to a usual wrong keypress, where the user has to categorize once again, with this error tui simply jumps to the next task but also prints the "wrong. try again". this error usually appears for the firts time between the 10th and 20th input and there's no whole round where it doesn't appear at least twice. I just found out that this error also occurs on jamie.org meat vs. vegetable test so it looks like a bug.

I'd be glad to here about solutions or if anybody got the same problem (as mentioned before I'm running tui on moodle 1.5).

another problem I have is that I actually could translate the most important words into german but I don't know how to translate the "or" which is printed when to categories (e.g. meat or positive; vegetables or negative) are compared. so if anybody knows where to change the code please tell me!!

I have not noticed the bug that you, Christian mention. I have taken a lot of tests and have not noticed wrong categorisations. I am sorry I don't know what else to say. I am using 1.6. Perhaps there is a 1.5 issue? I guess that one of the stimuli is in the wrong category in the meat vs vegetable?

Oops, "or" is not in the language file. This is a bug alas. My guess is that it is in the tui.swf file which I can not even open. You would need a very recent version of macromedia flash, which I do not possess.

Now I have to bother you with yet another question: studying the literatur I found out that the procedure used to interpret the test-results includes a calculation of the erroneous answers. I checked the mysql-data and unfortunately i couldn't find the needed data. Is there such data available in the mysql-database?

greetings, chris

Tim,

I got similar error results with Moodle 1.9 so uninstalled and went back to 1.6 but now the installation just does not work.  I am up against a deadline for a student of mine I have been helping for science fair project testing the validity of IAT/TUI type testing.  Her goal is to run a test looking at the association of Islam with terrorism.  The kicker is that we are at an international school in SUDAN!  The results shoudl be interesting.

We have tried the "make your own" feature at the TUI page but it just doesn't work with words like 'tasty' and 'hamburger'.  Do you know of anyone running a TUI page who would be willing to add a test with a list of words and pics created by this student?

You can e-mail me about this directly at bwaugh@krtams.org.   Likewise,to any white knights out there able to help!

Brad

I'm not even getting that far. I just installed the TUI module on moodle 1.8.4, but when I go to add an activity, I don't see "tui" on the list, instead I see modulename. When I select it I do get the screen for adding a tui, but when I save I get an error that reads:

"Course module ID was not provided"

The module appears (with the TUI icon) as an activity, but when clicked the same error is displayed.

I found the code that's generating the error in the scripts for all the good that does me (I couldn't script my way out of a paper bag).

Can anyone help? This is such a great module and I'd really love to use it.

Thanks
