Software for screen mock ups?

Software for screen mock ups?

Hi moodlers,

I know people have talked about screen shot and demo software here from time to time, but I am interested in how people make screen "mock ups" to propose a new screen layout.

What software do people use for these screen mockups? Is it a standard general package like Photoshop or something that is created for this purpose only?

And advice would be welcome!

TIA,
Tim. smile

Hi Tim,

Snagit comes with a simple painting software so you can edit screen shots as soon as you snap them.

But Mwsnap is almost as good, and freeware, but you have to use MS Paint, Photoshop, or (my choice) Photoimpact to edit the screenshots after you have snapped them.

Other free image manipulation programs include The GIMP (java, the most famous, but crashes on my computer and I find it difficult to use), and Paint.net (a sort of super MS Paint). There are others for mac/linux.

Hi Timothy and Ger,

Thanks a lot for your replies. approve

Which of these packages best allows someone to actually construct new screen images that don't exist yet (not screenshots of existing screens with annotations)? I don't know how people here at moodle.org create new screen layouts in a breeze.

I am not a very visual person - was never too good at art at school etc. I really want to learn GIMP or Photoshop, but they seem daunting. I suppose that may be the only solution, but I was wondering if there was an easier way...

Tim.

Hello:

Apart from printing the screen, there are other software that allows you to make demo presentations:

comercial: viewlet buidler (http://www.qarbon.com)
macromedia captative or robodemo(http://www.macromedia.com)
camtasia studio (http://www.softonic.com/ie/17614/Camtasia_Studio)

open source: Wink (http://www.debugmode.com/wink)
Camstudio -previous to the comercial robodemo- (http://www.um.es/atica/gat/servicios/CamStudio.zip)

regards,

Gabriela

Hi Gabriela,

What I was after was an easy way to create completely new screen layouts - not to capture existing screens. Something like in this thread.

Do any of these packages allow that?

Thanks,
Tim. smile

Hi Tim,

Here's what I do if I want to make a mockup:

  1. I go to a Moodle page which looks closest to what I want to have in my mockup.
  2. I save the page on my hard disk
  3. I use a web editor (I use WebsitePro, but any web editor will do) to change the page
Here's an (old) example of a mockup that I created this way:

Thanks a lot Prem, the idea about using a Web Editor is something that hadn't occurred to me!  I will try this soon,

Cheers,
