Can't run the All-in-one package for Windows 1.9.12+

Can't run the All-in-one package for Windows 1.9.12+

Since I am technologically challenged, I installed the package version for Windows on my computer (I will use a server when I am ready to go public with my training).  After installing, I did EVERYTHING suggested in the troubleshooting section, but when I hit the "Start Moodle.exe" button, a black screen flashes and is gone.

I unblocked port 80, installed the "library file" (and updated Explorer), even deleted programs such as Skype that might have been configured to use port 80. Nothing worked!

Is this package installation much more complicated than the brief instructions imply? (if so, I should probably give up).

Please give me suggestions!

You should find a program called xampp-control in the root of your install. This will fire up a gui for controlling the various parts of a Windows Apache Mysql PHP (WAMP) stack. This will avoid the flashing black screen of doom sympton. Then click apache and mysql to see which will run.The word running should come up surrounded in green.  Chances are that there is something up with apache and it will briefly flash green and then dissappear and it will be writing an error log in apache\logs\error.log.  Report what is says in that log here, as the meaning may not be at all obvious. I have been reading posts this week of people having problems with the all in one stack having problems under Windows 7.

Thank you, Marcus, for such a quick response! I did what you said but the word running did not appear. The note at the bottom of the page says: " Warning: Directory Mismatch"

When I hit the start button, the response is "Apache (or MySql) started > busy"

By the way, since Moodle 1.91 wasn't working, I downloaded the 2. package (and I can't seem to erase that program). My computer's operating system is Windows XP.

Please help!

Hi Joyce,

All the techies will jump all over me, but I'd suggest you try http://bitnami.org/stack/moodle It's intended for non techies like you and me. In the long term you may want to try something else, but in the short term it gets Moodle up and running on your computer in just a few clicks. You should probably uninstall any other servers you've already (tried) to install first.

HTH,

Glenys

The warning is just that, only a warning, Apache should still be able to run. I note that you have taken skype out of the equation for blocking port 80 but are you confident nothing else is blocking it (firewall?, IIS ....) Check out this page

http://serverfault.com/questions/26564/how-to-check-if-a-port-is-blocked-on-windows.

But as Glenys says, Bitnami might get you up and working

Hello Marcus,

Thank you again for responding (Glenys, too)! I used your link, checked to see that port 80 was open and then added port 80 and moodle to my firewall exceptions. When I started the installation through web browser/localhost,

I got the error message "database  connection failed." Am I supposed to do something with the database before I attempt to install?

Hi Joyce,

Did you add a password for the database?

If so then you most probably missed my previous comment:

Hello Mary,

The first time I tried to install it, I did fill in the blanks but when that didn't work, I went back to the original. It still didn't work, even when I tried it just now.

Even though I may have to give up, I am SO impressed by the support from you and others on this forum. Thank you very much!!

Hi Joyce,

That's all 'Moodle Start' does...that's its sole purpose. If you are not familiar with MS-DOS (from the 1980's) which the Moodle Start 'Command' windows looks like, you will see it as just a 'black screen' which pops-up on your computer screen adds a few lines of code and is gone....pooof!

What you should have done after the Moodle Start screen vanished, was open your browser window, and type the following line http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/ (one or other should work).

This starts off your Moodle insallation. All you need is set is the 'default' language for your Moodle site, then just click continue, resist the temptation to add anything other than your name and personal details at the end when you can fill in your 'Adnin'profile.

If you get to this stage you have cracked it.

When you have finished playing with Moodle, sign out and close your browser window. Next Go to your 'Moodle 4 Windows' folder and CLICK the "STOP Moodle" icon. The Black screen will appear and you should see some white text which says Moodle is closing - Thank you for using Moodle  - press any key to exit.  Or something on similar lines.

Hope this helps?

Mary
