We have set up our site by semester, then by discipline, with the courses for each discipline.

Biology
etc.
Creating the subcategories of every discipline each semester is extremely time-consuming. Is there a way to upload the list of categories and have Moodle create them like we do the student uploads?
We are using Moodle 1.9.11

Not really. To be honest this has always been a limitation of Moodle to my mind. It doesn't understand course/category "years" (or whatever you want to call them).

We use meta courses--for combining courses. However, as a college, we have courses set up by semester and then by discipline. So, my problem is trying to find a way to mass-create every semester 70+ subcategories under the semester category.

Thanks, but we MUST keep all courses and related data for one year (by law). Also, we don't offer the same courses every semester and each course has a unique section number that changes from semester to semester. What I really need is a way to mass create subcategories.
Unfortunately, your requirements would probably mean custom coding.
