Ah! But HTMLArea has an icon 
that causes a popup window to show up. This window has no "jewelery" -- most of the browser artifacts are gone, but it really is a completely new browser window.
Now, it may be that the modification to TinyMCE that you're suggesting for fullscreen windows might be the analogous function. It may go a long way to solve my issue. I'll have to give that a try.
