backup 1.9 restore to 2.1

backup 1.9 restore to 2.1

I have created a backup file in an instance of Moodle 1.9.8 build 20100325.  I tried restoring it in Moodle 2.1.  I'm getting two error messages.

This is the first message:

The selected file is not a standard Moodle backup file. The restore process will try to convert the backup file into the standard format and then restore it.
Format:  Moodle 1
Type:  Course
When I select continue, I am able to select the option to restore as a new course (among other options).  But when I select continue, I receive this message:

Coding error detected, it must be fixed by a programmer: PHP catchable fatal error

More information about this error

And I am unable to restore the course, however a course is created in the proper category.  The course's name is: Course restoration in process.  There is nothing in the course itself, however.
Not sure even where to begin with this.
Thanks.

It was my understanding that 2.1 was going to allow backups in 1.9 to be restored in 2.1, is this not the case?  We have a large production instance, and want to run 2.1 along side 1.9 so that users can move their content over as they did from Blackboard to Moodle.

Thanks
