Help for someone starting to hotpot : embedded player

I have tried to do this so many times and still no luck! Can some good soul tell me where I'm going wrong.

I've put together a Jcloze with Dewplayer following very clear instructions from Glenys Hanson. When I export to HTML it all looks good but when I click on the player it says XML error. I've tried checking the sound file (bitrates size etc). I've tried different browsers and I got Glenys herself to check and she told me she was able to create the exercise fine. But my page doesn't work. I have just uninstalled Hot Potatoes and and reinstalled the newer 6.4 version but still the same problem.

Here's the link to the dossier : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30787590/test.rar

Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong. It's really very frustrating!

Thanks - you may be saving a 747 from going down one day!!

Hi Rupert,

Could you try generating the exercise on a different computer ? What computer are you using ?

Another thing you could try is uploading the exercise (in zip not tar format) to Gordon's test site to see what happens there and so Gordon can have a look at it easily.

You could also use Moodle inbuilt audio player or, if you use QuizPort, the square brackets notation. These both work perfectly well - though I do prefer the look of Dewplayer.

Cheers,

Glenys

PS Years ago, I used to teach Vietnamese and Chinese pilots English in preparation for being trained to fly A320s. I used to tremble every time there was an accident involving certain airlines fearing it was one of the pilots I'd taught who hadn't understood the control tower. tongueout By now there must all have retired, so I can relax.

Hi Rupert,

an old issue ... Your code is broken:

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="dewplayer.swf?<br />mp3=PCD11.mp3&amp;showtime=1" width="200" height="20">
<param name="wmode"<br />value="transparent" />
<param name="movie" value="dewplayer.swf?<br />mp3=PCD11.mp3&amp;showtime=1" />
</object>

which results from linebreaks converted to <br /> tags, which in turn is a reslut from Copy-Paste habits.

Avoid Copy-Paste. Make sure your code is NOT broken. Your code MUST run as a single line in HotPotatoes.

Cheers

Stan

Thanks Stan

I finally had a couple of attempts that worked but was going crazy trying to understand why some did and some didn't.I compared but inside the hotpot format - I see now I need at least to be able to compare the code! Your mail clears it all up - and I'll move onto the next stage of moodle uploading.

Thanks for such speedy assistance. (Thanks Glen also) It certainly helps to know you're not alone when you start...

Hi Rupert and Stan,

And I looked at your code for ages, Rupert, without seeing where the problem was. If you'd like to meet the guy who does see the problems and tells us the answers, you could come to the HotPot MiniMoot in Paris on the 23rd of August.

And no apologies for the second plug of the day,

Glenys
