We use mainly self enrolment, and on the whole tend not to use enrolment keys. I finally tracked down the enrolment plugins and the setting for slef enrolment, but have hit a snag. The help button says leave the enrolment key field blank if you don't want one, but it is also a required field so it won't let you do so. Anyone else come across this?
Have you checked in site admin>plugins>enrolments>self enrolment ? Because there is a setting there, for which the default is No, to require or not an enrolment key on new courses
Thank You. That helped. I think I had found it before and set it to yes. Is it possible to have some courses with a key and some without?

Where does the teacher or manager enter the enrolment key? I have been looking for it on the course setup page.

Check out http://docs.moodle.org/en/Course_settings#Enrolments
For a course, click Settings > Users > Enrolment methods > Self enrolment. Needs to be enabled at a system level as well.
