Open Source at the Core of a National eLearning Strategy:Analysis of Developments in New Zealand by Dr. Ken Udas, Director of e-Learning at the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand.
abstract
Open source software (OSS) is increasingly becoming an important part of New Zealand's tertiary education sector. This report discusses the role of open source software as the organising principle behind New Zealand's national e-learning strategy. The report provides an overview of government e-learning policy and open source initiatives currently underway in New Zealand, followed by possible future scenarios for open source in the tertiary sector. The author aims to provide an accessible pathway for senior academic managers and policymakers to understand open source software and open source community as an enabler of particular national education goals, and to open up a debate about the future added-value potential of open source in higher education.
