Students are submitting work through 'Advanced uploading of files' type assignments. Separate Groups are setup. All is going really well - but for some reason a few students pages on the marking page seem to be 'read only' to the Tutor - ie they cannot adjust the grade or amend their comment - but it is not for all students in their group - some are absolutely fine and can be edited as I would expect. For these particular students, when you go to the Grades page in the course for the particular assignment they have a sand coloured background, where the ones that are OK in the marking page are the usual themed colour on thier entries. Is it possible for a Teacher to mark the assignment for an individual student in some way that closes it down for re-editing? (Enable send for marking is set to 'no')

I'll bet the grades are locked in the gradebook. Is this 1.9+?
We don't use the gradebook, but I've seen this kind of problem on the forums before. Someone who knows how can tell you or you can search for something like "locked grade."

This may happen when the grade is updated directly in the gradebook. In such a case the gradebook locks the grade so as to prevent the automatic synch with the assignment from overriding it. If that's the case you need to edit those grade entries in the gradebook (turn editing on and click the edit icon next to each such grade to edit the grade) and clear the 'overriden' checkbox.

Perfect - this is exactly what has happened and has released the entry in the assignment marking page as well as removing the sand coloured highlight from the gradebook.

I edited one grade for one student via the gradebook, because the assignment refused to save the grade and feedback given on the assignment grading page. As a result ALL the grades and feedback for all the students in all assignments are locked. How can this happen?
Am I to manually go through each individual grade and take off the override (which only takes effect if you change the grade in the process).
Isn't there a shortcut via the database to remove the override for the assignments in the course (without also removing the grade and the feedback).

See suggestion for Resetting all overridden flags (linked also from docs at http://docs.moodle.org/en/Grade_editing). Haven't tried it myself. hth
