Porting Face-to-face to Moodle 2.0

Hi all,

Porting the Face-to-face module to Moodle 2.0 is something everyone wants, however it is not a small job. Unfortunately I do not have the time or resources to complete this job myself until early next year, however I do have *some* time available to help.

A few people have approached me about possibly being able to combine efforts to complete the port, I think this is a great idea - and would like to hear from any body else interested in helping.

We can split up the tasks involved, I can contribute, review and commit patches, and we can make it a community effort in true Open Source style.

So, if you think you would be interested and have some time available, please reply here with details.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron Barnes

George Prout -

I would be interested in helping out with this, although the lack of other responses is a little worrying!  As 2.0 has now "gone live" I intend to upgrade one of my test servers & losing f2f would be a show stopper for the production side.  I guess this is the case for many people so I intend to look at porting the module over.

Has anyone made a start on this, or at least identified what changes need addressing?

Regards
George

I don't have the technical skills to help program the migration, but I would be willing to help test any releases and we may be hiring a programmer on a part time basis - if so he/she could potentially help out (but that won't be until early 2011).

At the very latest the migration would be made in early 2011, more details will be posted when we start.

Unless of course someone else beats us to it, so I too would be interested if anyone had made a start.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hello Aaron,

I'm not a programmer either but very interested in this effort.  This is an important module for those who use Moodle in an enterprise setting that has both classroom based and online courses.  I would also be happy to assist in testing or other ways that you might find helpful.  I'll be anxious to hear how this effort is progressing.

Thanks for your work,
Dan

Hi Aaron,

I'd like to put my vote in for as soon as possible! We're setting up our Moodle instance and planned to use f2f after testing it in v1.9.  We didn't realize it wasn't available in 2.0 yet. Do you have a more specific date for the migration?  Closer to Feb or March, or later?

Thanks for your hard work!
Kymm

I can't speak for Aaron, but what I've found from communicating with several plugin maintainers is that if you're planning to use Moodle 2.0 with non-core plugins (like certificate, f2f, etc.) you're probably going to have to wait until around May/June, unless you have the developers in-house or subcontracted to support accelerating development.

We're in the process of hiring (unless new budget cuts intervene) a developer so that we can assist with/accelerate 2.0 plugin development. Hopefully some other organizations are looking to do the same thing and collectively we can really more 2.0 plugins available (right now there's only a handful available).

Hello - same here, not having face-to-face will stop me from upgrading. 伤心  I'm not a programmer but I can certainly offer to test out alpha/beta etc. versions.

Many thanks for your efforts!!!

Hello Aaron,

Just wanted to ask if there is already a start date for development or even a release date?

Greetings,

Thorsten

Hi Thorsten,

Unfortunately all I can say is 2011 sometime. Without any development help, or clients funding the work I cannot be any more specific.

Cheers,
Aaron

Tim Corkerton -

Hi Aaron

I am starting out on a brand new moodle implementation (integrated with drupal). Actually I have not used moodle for about 6 years. It makes sense to use moodle 2.0 as it has so many promised benefits and there is a requirement for face-to-face courses.  Is the face to face module the only way to go? If so could you provide an update as to the progress of the port. perhaps I coulld get involved in helping with that? How would i go about getting involved?

Regards
Tim

Aaron has been responsive by email - we have a programmer working for us that I just assigned to start this migration. Can't give a firm estimate yet, but I'm hoping that it can be ready for testing by the end of the month (March) or early April.

Aaron - have you looked at this port enough to have an idea what kind of funding it might take to move this along? Thanks, Dan

Simon Clegg -

Hi Daniel,

Aaron has previously quoted this job at 100 hours at GBP70 (£7,000).

That's approx 11K in USD or AUD.

We'd need a big piggie bank!

I think the main thing the port needs at the moment is developer time. If anyone has some spare resources, please get hold of me so we can organise movement 微笑

Thanks all for the interest,
Aaron

Hi Flotter,

Only a small amount of the work involved in porting the module has been completed so far, but I will definately post here when we are ready for testing.

Thanks for your offer,
