If you disallow the Review options then Students can't go 'backwards'.
Not displaying the menu also forces the Students to go through the Lesson in a fairly linear way.
Ultimately if you want to have one 'subject' or 'topic' not available until a pre-requisite has been completed then you could, as you mention, split into two Lessons and force a dependency
