Well, you may have noticed http://moodle.com is now operational with a range of paid services for Moodle. Moodle.com is my private company that I hope will provide a way for me and other Moodle developers to make a living from Moodle, and at the same time help Moodle grow faster than ever.

I just thought I'd explain a few things about it so people don't jump to the wrong conclusions about Moodle's future:

  • Moodle will always be free and open source under the GPL license - I want to make that absolutely clear! smile
  • The good level of free support around here will not diminish - in fact I hope it will gradually get better over time as Moodle Affiliates start taking up the challenge. I'll still be here too - just try and keep me away! - but hopefully I will be able to spend more time developing great new features.
  • Apart from this discussion, I'm going to try and avoid pushing moodle.com services in these forums - I have no intention of forcing people to pay for anything - moodle.com exists purely as an option for those who need something done urgently or who need guaranteed support.

I have some very big dreams for Moodle and I think this step is the logical one that will allow those dreams to happen. There's still lots to do!

Comments and ideas welcome. smile

Congratulations on the launch of

Moodle.com!

&nbsp May Moodle.com enjoy a level of success at least equal to the outstanding success Moodle.org has enjoyed in it's very early days. Thank you for dreaming large! Your dream has become the dream of many. May all of our dreams come true...

All the best in your new venture, Martin

Thanks - I'm slowly evolving a "look" for Moodle graphics.

Here's some more graphics stuff, including my new business card http://moodle.com/stuff/

Martin,

Good luck with your new venture. Moodle.com. I'm pretty sure that if you are dedicated, just like with Moodle.org, your company will have great succes.

I fully agree with you, that you shouldn't 'push' the offered commercial services in the discussions of Moodle.org. Keep it clear and isolated. However, the open discussions in Moodle.org, and your achievements, can be like a "show case" for potential customers. Let them wander around. Invite them to do a free course etc. At this moment there might be some potential customers around here.

As regards your "commercial services" offered on Moodle.com, you might want to be a little more specific. I know, I know, you just started, so you might not have an overview of all the services. Before I wrap up, as I said, let's not talk a lot about "business" here, let me tell you what I think about:

Possible services

1. Set up and host a complete learning environment (the project is managed fully via the net). Progress reports, interactions with the customers etc are all available within Moodle.

Your value added: not everyone wants to go into the hassles of setting up a php server, mysql database etc. They might not even have the knowledge to do it.

Customer: schools, companies, etc.

2. Specific customization and development of Moodle.

Customers: schools, companies etc. who already have Moodle installed or another learning environment, but who wants extra functionality to be developed.

These are only two services.

Let me know what you think.

Good suggestions, Runy. Please note that there is a fairly successful company in the US which follows this hosting / development model called Digital Think. They've been creating custom learning environments for big companies (like Sun Microsystems) for years. They have their own proprietary eLearning engine that they use.

All the best Martin!!

Given your track record Moodle.Com will fly high.

Suggestion  1.  create a FAQ forum

    Thanks much--Dave

Martin,

1. I have some specific questions about the possibility of doing certain things - mostly relating to customization of Moodle, and how it would be managed. Should I post here, or by private email?

2. Where is the server, and where (what country) is the legal address of the company the contract would be with?

After spending quite a few hours( a lot actually) on the installation , almost got there , but not quite (I'm not a programmer) then decided to make use of the 'hosting service'
I have only words of praise for Martin, and moodle.com it was Saturday, after doing the easy payment thing , I received an email at 5:12pm asking what name I wanted on my site, at 5:34pm I had an email that my site was up and running !
I couldn't find out how to type in the boxes until I changed from HTML ( silly of me ) I have a course almost ready for a try out (by someone other than myself)
Moodle is absolutely fantastic, thank you again Martin.
