Assignment

I've found a work around, but can't understand why it is necessary - I haven't seen it before.  I am having to go into the Gradebook...Categories and Items and edit each assignment's Grade Display type from Default(Default) to Real.  Then each grade shows up as a Final Grade and also the students see their grades when they go into the assignment.

I've checked the Site Administration...Grades...Grade Items and the Grade Display Type is set to Real.  So surely it should be defaulting to Real, rather than me having to set each item to Real?  I'm helping the teachers to use Moodle, I don't relish trying to show them that they need to go and change the setting through the Gradebook to get the grades to display.  What am I missing?
