Usability: Does the big audio player has to be so ugly ?

Hi,

I discover Moodle with the version 2.0 previews and there is a usability question I need to ask.

I guess I'm not the only one to find the audio player very ugly and I would like to know if there are plans to change the way it looks ?

Does anyone know about any other multimedia plugin for audio files ?

Thanks.

Ooh - I had better go back and check this - the last time I looked at the audio player in Moodle 2.0 it looked exactly the same as usualthoughtful

Hi "open flips" and Mary,

In Moodle 1.9 and still in 2.0 there are 2 Flash mp3 players. Those are available if the media filters have been enabled at admin level.

In a resource text, when you link text to an mp3 file, the link is "filtered" and automatically displayed as a "small" flash player (2). This is the usual way of doing things and many moodle users have never used or seen the "big one".

If you go to Add Resource / File / and directly select an mp3 file in your course files (or upload it), then that mp3 file is displayed with the "big (ugly)" flash player (1).

I quite agree with the OP that the big player looks rather ugly. In fact both players have a very dated look to them, and it would be good if 2.0 (or 2.1) was the occasion to introduce a better-looking flash player. Personallly my favorite flash player is DewPlayer (see attached screenshot #3), but there are scores of nice-looking players that Moodle could use.

Joseph

Thanks Mary and Joseph for this quick reply.I just could not believe we still have such a player in 2.0, that was not a dream then...

I have hope in Native Audio in the browser coming soon (for non-ie users?) to get rid of flash players.

Would you have any idea of how much effort would it take to replace it with another player ?

I've added the MDL-23644 tracker with hope for a change.

Sorry I don't know anything about native audio in the browser, however anyone with Flash expertise is welcome to change the appearance of the mp3 players. The fla files may be found in filter/mediaplugin.

The trouble with using native players is that Mozilla won't include MP3 in Firefox, and chances are that most audio files people will want to play through Moodle will be MP3.

It's also worth noting that IE 9 *will* support native audio playback bringing it in line with the rest of the market. The only issue is codecs.

I've added the same request as MDL-23870 - although for different reasons.
I will set up a demo with a new player soon and will update MDL-23870 with the relevant information - so please have a look there.

cheers,
