I am trying to use the database activity as a sort of job application process. I want users to be avble to add an enry to the database and once they have done that they should only be able to see their own entry. There would also be a manager/administrator of that database who can see all entries.
I want to do this without using groups. Any ideas.

Sure this is possible.
Just set the database up so that new entries must be approved; then delete the approval button from all of the database templates. This way the teacher will see all entries and the user (student) will only see their non-approved entries.

This is the solution, managed it pretty much immediatly after posting. I had another database in the course and I'd altered permissions course wide rather than just for that one resource so that was giving me headaches too.
But it was exactly the method you gave me.
