Site-wide course creators are participants in all courses

Site-wide course creators are participants in all courses

Hi

I am working with a school who has been working with Moodle for several years and has added the Course Creator role to all teachers at the site level.  The teachers are all showing as Participants in all courses and are getting email from forums in all courses (which is very annoying).  When I look in Assign Roles in a course, only the correct teachers and students are showing.  Should I remove the site-wide roles?  Or is there another way to stop all of these unwanted emails?

I'd remove these site wide course creators frankly. If they really need to be course creators (and Im not overly fond of that) then put them in their departmental/curriculum area category. It's possible also that the forums have been set to "force everyone to be subscribed" rather than allowing users to choose -that can be changed back, but is a hassle.

Thanks Mary

I think I will do that, I'll just ensure that teachers are enrolled as teachers where they need to be.  I don't think any teacher has created a course in the 3 or so years that they've had Moodle.

I don't think that should happen. Have you modified the capabilities of the Course Creator role?

We have this problem as well, it has functioned this way since we moved to Moodle a few years ago. We have several instructional technologists who are assigned this role, giving them to ability to assist faculty users across a broad spectrum of issues. We have had to slowly modify the role abilities as well as do some custom development in order to facilitate a better usage of the role.

If you do not need these users in every course, then I would not recommend the use of the Course Restore role. However, if you do need persons assigned in this manner, you can work within the role to adjust the settings until your needs are met.

I'll have a look at the capabilities of the Course Creator role, but also probably take Mary's suggestion and get rid of these role assignments at least at site level.

Hi Greg
We have a Helpdesk Role which is assigned at both site level for some users and category level for others. This role has 'Prevent' for the Initial subscription capability which seems to prevent forum subscription emails getting sent to them.
I hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks Howard

I haven't personally done that, I will have a look.  When they first started with Moodle they used another consultant so I'm not certain what he did or didn't do.
