After finishing building a moodle site i've decided to update my moodle installation via CVS because some little errors appeared... I used TortoiseCVS and i had wamp server... When TortoiceCVS finished working i tried running moodle (via admin/index.php) to update, some error occured but the instalation seemed to continue. Finally when done, i've tried to enter in my site but there was no graphics at all on the login page (just the texts in english when i used greek and some other options) and when entered the login name/pass the system did nothing!

Tried to copy over the old data of moodle directory (i've got backup before started the update process) but i can only enter and see the lesson titles without having any admin privilege!

What can i do to run my site again? This is my final paperork to get my diploma!!!

(I've got an old backup of the full wamp directory and the final database after installing the moodle update)

Sorry for my English and i wish that someone has the right soloution sad

Some more info: The update is to version 2. Seems the contents all here but no graphics, just text! (sometimes appears the message: sql_length() not available anymore)
Also if i try to install 1.9 version back, i can finally login (inserting my id as admin in sql) but there seems no content other than the lesson titles...

I'm a desperate student!

THe issue seems to be the permission
you need to check the permission for the moodledata
folder and also the update the new paths in the config file .

please trace the error by posting you apache error logs her so that i can investigate better.

ok if this is what prevents me to have my site back on, what can i do to solve it?
Tried to delete the moodle folder, installing a clean version 2.0 but in the database tab in installation when i'm setting the user and password (the old ones) the next page says: Cannot downgrade mod_assignment from 2009062500 to 2007101511.

I managed to run my site again. I think that something got to do with mods or themes because when i copy paste in my working site the folders "mod" and "theme" from my site before update, the updated and at last working site gave me back the same error feedbacks...
So, what did i do?
I simply deleted the moodle folder, extracted the moodle 2.0 that i've download, i created a new database and then just changed config.php and config-dist.php so that they point to the old database that i used and had my content...
Everything is here but sometimes i have some error messages that can't connect to the database and i can't use the Glossary (that's necessary for me...) but i think that these problems are from unstable version that i 've installed!

Yes, there would be, Moodle v2 is not stable. Stick with the latest version from Downloads. Good solution btw. Better than just overwriting everything in a reinstall.

Can you use an earlier backup?

Alternatively, updates are happening almost every day for v2.0, each one is supposed to make it more stable, but sometimes someone forgets something.

AFAIK there are differences between the databases, but I do not think they would be so great as to not being able to repopulate a 1.9.8 database.

As a suggestion, if you have time, recreate the v1.9.8 do a backup of both and compare the structure. If there are large scale differences, they will show up immediately. I know there are over 200 tables but one table at a time may be the only option as far as repopulating the earlier db...

Or, you could go to the Developers forum and ask if there is a backward compatible SQL statement available that would allow to to do it...

I have had the same issue, on my test Moodle. Started to look at it, but then could not be bothered so just installed a newer version. My suspicion is there needs to be some more clear instructions regarding the use of TortoiseCVS to update Moodle. I too cannot get it to work properly, but then I have not spent too much time on it since that first time. Sorry I do not have better advice, but if a tool is frustrating for me to use, then in the bin it goes - as did Moodle the first time I tried it..big grinbig grin big grin. I suspect I will come back to it when I have more time - as I did Moodle.
