This sounds like bug MDL-21045 which has just been fixed in Moodle 1.9.8. Are you able to upgrade your site to obtain the fix?

Hmm, I agree that your 1.9.7+ 20100208 version should include the fix. Thus, if you're still experiencing problems, please do as Eloy suggests in MDL-21045 i.e. create a new tracker issue for it. (You'll need to create a tracker account in order to create an issue.)
