is this a bug in grader report ?

is this a bug in grader report ?

Dear all,

I have the following groupings/groups in my course :

grouping (G1) -> contains only one group (g1) -> this group contains only one student (user1)

grouping (G2) -> contains only one group (g2) -> this group contains only one student (user2)

I created two online text assinments: A1 and A2.

assignment (A1) is set like this: separate groups and for grouping A1 with "available for group members only" checkbox is checked.

assignment (A2) is set like this: separate groups and for grouping A2 with "available for group members only" checkbox is checked.

grader report is set to use quick grading and simple weighted mean of grades aggregation type.

when each student submits their text, I (as admin) would grade them, by navigating to each assignment and click on "view 1 submitted assignment" link and then grade them normally.

but when I open the grader report, I notice that both assignments are ready to be graded again using quick grading (editing is on), and both assignments (if quickly graded) will affect course total for each student !!!

how come that !!??

I must not be able to quick-grade assignment (A2) for user1 since this assignment is inteded for grouping (G2) only, and I must not be able to quick-grade assignment (A1) for user2 since this assignment is intended for grouping (G1) only.

is this a bug or what ?

Hi Murad,
Gradebook in 1.9 does not consider groups. Please vote for MDL-13868, so it can be fixed in the future.
For now, you will need to go to the gradebook, and exclude every single student who belongs to Grouping 1 from being graded in Assignment 2 (same for another grouping)
You still will see and will be able to grade Grouping 1 students on A2. But since they will be excluded, it will not affect the total.

I'm not sure that excluding every student is really necessary. You don't have to grade G1 students on A2 and if the grader report is confusing in that respect, the submission page should be used for grading, until the gradebook is grouped that is. 微笑

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

But if you do not exclude them then the final grade will treat absent grade as 0, so students will be penalized for "not submitting" the assignments..

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

Itamar Tzadok -
True, but then you can simply put the two assignments in a category and set the category to sum of grades. Then the course total will take the category total which for each student should be the grade of the assignment the student submitted. this should be simpler to set up than excluding each and every student from one of the assignments. 微笑

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

Elena Ivanova -
mm, but if A1 = 100 points, and A2 = 100 points, the total will still say out of 200 possible points.
So the students can become confused why they got 100 out 200 (or only 50%).

To ease the pain of going and excluding every single student, I would rather suggest using SWM or WM then for such category, and checking "Aggregate only non-empty grades".

I'm not sure I see how the 50% confusion issue can come about. At any rate "Aggregate only non-empty grades" should work too. 微笑

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

Murad Jamal -

thank you elena and ltamar for your kind replies ..

I will vote for  MDL-13868 because it's the only reasonable way to deal with groups/groupings ...

do you mean by excluding a student is to go to his/her grade and press on the edit icon and check "exclude" check box ?

and yes, "aggregate only non-empty grades" has worked as in this image:

so Elena what do you mean by SWM & WM ?

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

the bigger pain would be on user report page 伤心

student (user1) will assignment (a2) in their user report page, and that would be confusing for both student and parent ..

I added this important comment on MDL-13868 page ...

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

SMW is Simple Weighted Mean, WM is Weighted mean in Aggregation methods.
You can use "aggregate only non-empty grades" only with them, but not with SUM.

"do you mean by excluding a student is to go to his/her grade and press on the edit icon and check "exclude" check box " - correct.
And if you will go through the pain of excluding every student, then simply mark Hidden checkbox as well.
That way the User Report will not show excluded/hidden items.
(make sure to set gradebook Settings to not show hidden items in user report 微笑)

wow this is a nice (temporary) solution (until they put groupings support in grader report) ... cool thank you 微笑

you can use "aggregate only non-empty grades" with "sum" aggregation, see :

Re: is this a bug in grader report ?

Elena Ivanova -
Glad it worked for you.

Sorry, you can not 微笑)
You can mark the checkbox - yes.
It will not do you any good though (that's why I have talked bout confusing 50% above with sum use). It should be disabled for sum, please vote: MDL-19151
And excluding of grades is also not compatible with sum aggregation.

screnshot with sum:

that's right 微笑

I voted for this bug .. this checkbox must be disabled on SUM aggregation !!

thank you so much elena ...

hi ELena,

I have put the following important comment on MDL-13868 that relates to you temp solution for groups/groupings support in grader report (manually hiding & excluding grades and grade items in grader report):

I really wonder why this issue has been set to low priority !! we have spent a lot of time setting up groupings ...
about Elena's temp solution, it will not work !! why:
if we have 2 groupings (G1 and G2) each one has one group (g1 and g2) respectively, and 2 students (s1 and s2) assigned for each group respectively, when a teacher adds two assignments (for example, online text) named A1 (for grouping G1) and A2 (for grouping G2) and checked the "available for group members only" check box in each assignment settings page, then there will be no problem in course page for students to see their grouping's own assignment, student s1 will only see assignment A1 and student s2 will only see assignment A2, now the teacher decides to let each grouping students to see only their own assignment in their user report, so he opened the grader report, and edited the grade item (A1) to be hidden, and edited the grade for (A1) to be excluded, now when student s1 logs in, he will see only his own assignment (which is A1) both on course page and on his user report, and this absolutely 100% right! but the big problem, when student s2 logs in, he will see assignment A2 on course page (and this is right) , but on his user report he will be shocked when he see assignment (A1) [ which belongs to grouping (G1) ] exists on his user report [and of course his own assignment A2 is hidden], thus, the final grade s2 will get will be very confusing for him ...
SO THIS IS REALLY A BIG PROBLEM !! IT MUST BE SOLVED VERY SOON ...
we have tons of groupings on our moodle installation !! so please we need a real solution ..

At this time I think you'll find that getting Moodle 2.0 fully prepared for release is getting the lion's share of attention so some bugs may languish.  Moodle is always looking for new hands so you might want to look into fixing it yourself.  Even if that results in a big learning curve I can testify to its being gratifying.
