Enroliling courses by group

Hey.

I'm working in a corporation with round 3000 people and want to enrol them to courses by groups. I thought this would be no problem, but it seems to be (I didn't found a solution in my book and on google).

Basic thing is this: We have different users (e.g.: Engineer, Worker, Secretary etc.) and we change courses frequently (work safety and stuff). Now I want to enrol for example all engineers to a course. In the enrol dialog, I can't automatically select all engineers (I can't even see who is engineer and who not). It's quite difficult to go through every user everytime.

I wonder how to do this. It should be easy, but I didn't explore how.

Maybe I got the wrong keywords (groups referrs to groups inside courses, but I want a group that is defined all over moodle).

Please don't tell me, that this isn't possible ຍິ້ມ. And if: Are there workarounds or plugins? What would be the first steps to develop a module?

Best regards!!!

ok - you can't currently have "site wide" groups -(I believe someone might have done a hack if you search here) It will be available hopefully in a later version of Moodle. However I suspect your users named engineers/secretary etc are just names of people, not particular roles or permissions and I suggest a workaround would be to include their name in their username as you upload them (you can re-upload via csv and override whatever you had before) So make the usernames for your engineers something like eng.johnsmith or for your secretary sec.janebrown and then you will be able easily to search for all engineers or secretaries etc to add to a group.

Thank you, Mary.

You're right about the nature of the groups I want to create. My Groups don't need no rights, roles or permissions. They only need to be visible to admins. The bad thing to your workaround is, that there will definitely be a day, when someone joins two groups (e.g. secretary and fire safety engineer).

What I'm looking for is kind of a module, that gives opportunities to push people to groups and then enrol the entire group. I'm doing the "Introducing to moodle programming" Course, maybe this isn't as hard to code... But before starting, I'd like to be sure, that someone didn't do this before. Thus, I'm going to look through available plug-ins now, but maybe you or someone has a hint or an idea?
