Hi,

it's time to start the first round of Moodle Workshop 2.0 public testing. I have prepared a test site with the new version installed for those who can't sleep for the last six months to see this in action 眨眼
Be warned - according to MDL-17827, there are still some subtasks to finish, most notably the support for training the assessment on the example submissions provided by teacher. Also, some features - like the proper anonymity checking - are not reviewed yet and are pretty well expected not to work at some places at the moment. And of course, there is no help or documentation written yet. Just click as crazy and see what happens 微笑

Please, in this first round, do not report the 2.0 bugs into the tracker yet but leave them as a reply in this thread instead.

The primary goal of this first testing round is to gather initial comments and feelings on the user interface. What I need at the moment are reports like "if the workshop is in the submission phase, teacher should see the list of all submissions". or "student should be informed on the time left for submitting" etc.

Thanks in advance for your time.

p.s. looking for a link to the test site? Try http://test.moodle.org/workshop/ and join our party 微笑

No, Rubrics are supported. Just create a new workshop and set the grading strategy method to Rubric. Then (after saving the module form), click "Edit assessment form".

These are standard debugging messages which relate to the Moodle core code, not the Workshop itself. Thanks for reporting them, anyway.

"Edit assessment form" is where you prepare the form which will be used by peers to assess others' work. If you have set the grading strategy of your workshop to "Rubric" then you prepare the rubric form. Please note the term "Rubric" in workshop is just one type of the grading scheme.

Hi Stephan,

this one is weird. Was it you who attached the file File_Appenzeller.jpg to the Cody's submission? If you open the file you realize it is not JPEG in fact but an HTML file containing the source code of the Wikipedia page "File:Appenzeller.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". So I guess it is either a bug in the Repositories (the new Moodle core stuff that lets you to attach images and other file without the need to download them to your computer) or the tester who played Cody did something wrong.

Nevertheless, while analysing your report, I noticed the submission checker was not finished yet so students can edit their submission all the time - instead of the submission phase only. I shall fix that one, too 微笑

Hi David,

Glad you noticed the "students can edit all the time"-problem.

I'm really loving the look and feel of the new workshop btw. So looking forward to using it on a productive system!

This is malicious... I already fixed your workshop, but...

The reason here was that there were actually three rubric criteria defined, not just those two Criterion 1 and Criterion 2. The description of the third criterion (the third row in the rubric table) consisted just of an empty HTML tag containing a space. Because the criterion description was not empty (it contained some HTML code), it was used. But because it contained white-space only and the levels did not contain any description, no radio element was displayed. But workshop required all criteria to be filled so it returned you to the form again and again.

The fix was trivial - to make sure the criterion description does not contain any "hidden" text. This is likely to repeat in the future, though...

The solution might be to have an explicit checkbox at every assessment form element in the assessment form editor. You have to have it checked if you want to use that element (criterion in this case).

I will think about - thanks again.

Yes, I personally call this "Vernellia feature" 眨眼

  1. Create workshop, choose grading strategy to be used for pre-submission assessment (it est for the assessing of example submissions) and choose the mode "Students must assess example submissions before their own submission"
  2. Define the assessment form
  3. Provide example submissions and reference assessments using the form defined in 2
  4. Switch workshop to submission phase
  5. Now students have to assess all your examples and then they can submit their own work
  6. When all students submitted their work, switch the workshop fo set-up phase (students can't do anything now)
  7. Redefine the assessment form. You can even change the grading strategy if you want.
  8. Allocate submissions for the peer-assessment (randomly or manually or with mix of both)
  9. Switch the workshop into assessment phase. Now students will have to peer-assess allocated submissions using the post-submission assessment form
  10. When done, switch the workshop into grading evaluation phase. Student's can't do anything here
  11. Let the workshop calculate grades for assessment and override them if you do not agree with the calculated values. You will be able to pick some submissions to be published (this replaces legacy league table feature) - not implemented yet
  12. Switch the workshop into the closed phase.

Re: Assessment Forms

Vernellia Randall -

Thank you so much for the Vernellia featurebig grin

But I do need to clarify something. When we first talked. I thought we discussed being able to load up a pre-submission assessment form and a post submission assessment form and just going in checking which form you wanted to use. I thought that once I did that with a course, then both the forms would be there available for use in future forms.

It sounds like in step 7. You might be talking about just going in changing the form. Is that right? If so, that is what I already do and that is not only time consuming but I have to repeat change the form back for use in subsequent classes.

Could you clarify for me?

And David - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU - you've made me a happy camper - I can't wait for 2.0

Hi Vernelia,

of course I remember we talked about this. I plan to have a possibility to export the assessment form itself into an XML file which can be then imported into any other workshop. So, there will be no list of forms to choose from but you will be able to have all assessment forms prepared in advance and then just upload them instead of manual creating them over and over again.
As this export/import feature is closely related to backup/restore feature, it is not implemented yet. And I can't say if it goes into 2.0 or 2.1. According to the plan, I shaould focus on the current functionality only in 2.0 and start adding new things like this later in 2.1.

Re: Workshop 2.0 testing - round 1

ben reynolds -
I created "I am a new workshop" http://test.moodle.net/workshop/mod/workshop/view.php?id=24 with no prior experience and without looking at the documentation. Student1 & student2 logins submitted a file and assessed each other.

All worked as I *think* is expected except that Teacher1's feedback to assessing students does not seem to be visible to them.

To make the students' feedback visible I tried changing the grading from no grade to a grade of 1. I tried recalculating the grade and overridining the grade. No change.

The students' assessment comments to each other are visible to the students. Good!

The teacher's feedback to the students about their assessment is not visible. Checked gradebook. Visited the Workshop as both students.

One question. Is it intended that students not have the html editor available when making comments in the assessment stage? That seemed odd to me.

Hi Ben and thanks a lot for your feedback.

Yes, teacher's feedback for assessing students (reviewers) is not displayed yet. It is known bug and I will fix it soon together with a bulk of other small changes.

Student's comments in assessment forms are intentionally plain textareas, not wysiwyg editors. There were several reasons for such decision. Reviewers should focus on the comment's content, not the formatting. Comments are not expected to be full-formatted HTML, just several sentences describing the reasons for grades. There are technical reasons for that, too. Moodle 2.0 does not allow to provide a stripped version of HTML editors yet. Once there is a way how to replace textareas with a light version of HTML editor, providing just basic set of formatting tools and not all these tables, embedded images, attachments etc, such form element can be used.

ben reynolds -
HI David,
Thanks for your response. One line makes me ask another question.

>just several sentences describing the reasons for grades

Does that mean there is a character limit to each textbox?

I ask because our writing courses ask for considerably more text than several sentences. Typically, we ask students to look at between 3 and 5 major items when workshopping each other, and the response can run to several hundred words over all.
Below is a typical example.

Ben,

the size of the comment field is limited just by the maximal allowed size of the database text fields, so this should not be issue. I agree we will have to replace these simple fields with some sort of resizeable input fields, maybe with basic set of formatting tool.

Thanks for the example text attached. Can you share some assessment forms you use? What grading strategy do you use, how do the assessment form elements look like?

p.s. I love the verb "workshopping each other" 微笑
