Assignments may not be the best way of doing this. Have you looked into using the grade book as you are able to export the information out of this in either plain text, spreadsheet and XML formats?
In the Categories and Items tab, you can add a grade for each week with a custom scale 0/5, 1/5, 2/5 etc
In the grades view, the teacher then turns editing on and uses the drop down box to select the attendance which can then be exported.
