Hello,

I am new here and I try to find out which open source e-learning environment would be the best to use in a university. I found a document, which mentioned, that an HRIS integration tool for moodle would exist, but I cannot find such a tool.  Does it really exist?

Barbara,

What is HRIS?

If you want to move content from one VLE to moodle and back again then you will find that moodle is a good choice, you zip your content up and upload it.  The problem will come if you have multiple choice questions, they are not so easily uploaded.  However, there are various tools discussed and posted in these forums for importing mcqs into moodle.

Key advantages for moodle in Unis IMHO are:
- ease of use for admins, teachers and tutors
- it can be customised as you can get to the code.
- robust and low maintenance
- designed around constructivist principles.

Hope that helps

Hello Richard,

thank your very much for your answer. HRIS means human resource information system. In fact, it's a database, designed for universities, containing all information about the students to do the whole administration work. In my case, the university would like to use these database to be sure to work with actual data.

I found this document, which mentioned a special HRIS integration tool for moodle:
http://odtl.dcu.ie/projects/web-tl/vle/CUE-LMS-White-Paper.pdf

An other question would be: Is it possible to define a special learning path in moodle? For example: You cannot see chapter 2 in a course before you did chapter 1.

Thanks a lot!

Hello Barbara,

several german universities and Fachhochschulen are working with moodle. Some of them are active user in the german forum http://moodle.org/course/view.php?id=18 or on www.moodle.de . Some more informations in http://moodle.org/sites/#DE und http://moodle.org/sites/#AU

For example  the Humboldt University in Berlin with more than 2.5000 user und 200 courses.

Special learning paths are possible with some activities. Yes. http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=12038

HRIS integration: there are two options: Import the user to a course from an HRS-managementsystem with bulkupload of users or administration with an external database. Second the export of test results and gradings as xls-file you can use for the  import to the HRS-System.
