Hi,
I have been working on a new course format that can fit better the needs of k-12 and OLPC teachers. Please provide feedback on what worked and what do you think of the course format. Are there things that you like? What things do you not like or find a bit annoying? Are there things that are counter intuitive? Some of the features that this course format includes are:
* adding one section at a time
* display only the most recent sections in the course page, and can click Next to view the rest
* the teacher can view all the sections if he/she chooses
Please help me test the demo site located at: http://test.moodle.org/timeline/ .

Hi José:
I couldn't get the buttons to work.
I couldn't get the buttons to work.
Hi there. I tried in FF but couldn't get anything to happen when I pressed the buttons either - I want to try in IE7 but keep getting that server error that affects your login session message - so I will try later and let you know

By "the buttons" are you referring to the "New Section" and "Show all sections" pushbuttons? I have a slightly dated version and at least the New Section pushbutton seems to work but I wanted to make sure we are talking about the same thing. Peace - Anthony
p.s. - I did get a PHP execution error on the Show All Sections.

Yes Anthony - I am referring to the New Section and Show All Sections buttons - when I press either of them, nothing happens.

Hmmm, same here.
Pressing either of these buttons results in a long "waiting for test.moodle.org" message, and nothing appears to happen.
Mac OSX, Firefox 3.

Using IE8 in XP, I also got a "server error that affects your login session message". I tried Google Chrome also in XP and was able to access the site. I tried to add a section and it seemed to be working but eventually nothing happened. Then, when I went back, I could no longer see any blocks.
Good luck, Wayne

Thank you guys for testing. I really appreciate the interest and help. I am getting the same long execution problems. I swear, I wasn't getting that before while I was adding the content. I will try downloading the data as a backup course and see if I can reproduce the same error in my local copy.
Thanks,
Jose
Thanks,
Jose
Hello,
I added a second course that includes the fixes. Could you guys help testing? http://test.moodle.org/timeline/course/view.php?id=3 .
Thanks,
Jose

Hi everybody,
I figured out what was causing the bug. I have created an issue in the tracker and uploaded a patch so that the test site can get updated. As soon as the course format is updated in the test site, I will post back in here. Thanks for the help with testing and interest in this course format.

Hi,
I created a cource, This new format is good. What about if a teacher wants to show more than one cource?

Hi Amitkumar,
Thanks for the help testing the course format. What do you mean about showing more than one course? A course format is the main page and it usually displays information about a single course. Could you explain your question a bit more?
Thanks,
Jose

Perhaps he means one topic section. It looks like you can show all sections or only one. In our school, we have differentiated instruction and a teacher could be teaching two sections at one time. It would be useful to be able to select which sections to show when collapsed.
I tried using the highlight feature as I think this would be an easy way to accomplish this, but I could only choose one section at a time.
Thanks,
Martha
When I first entered the test course, it was collapsed to one section. The pagination links did not show until I clicked to view all sections.
The pagination worked fine once I'd opened the course up to it's full extent.

Hello, i miss the jump to... boton which is in weekly format or topics format.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Hi José,
thanks a lot ; we work with very long pages ( up to 200 topics) so this helps with navigation and reduces the time to load a page.
some questions:
the page is shown in a reverse order ( highest topic number above) ; can this be changed?
can the number of topics in one page been changed?
is there a combination possible with the "jump to" menu?
what are the prospects of this project for getting a part of the regular moodle package? I'm a bit afraid that after starting with it we get problems with regular updates.
Is it compatible with all the themes?
kind regards
willem

Agreed with Willem, Roberto and Don;
the page is shown in a reverse order ( highest topic number above) ; can this be changed?
can the number of topics in one page be changed?
can the "jump to" menu be reinstated?
Also, the course format seems to revert to collapsed form (i.e. doesn't remember previous user view settings)

The reversal, and defaulting to showing just one section is on purpose!
If you are running your year long course, and using a new section for every week, you want users to click on the course and see today's content.
And if they want to see all sections (earlier material), they are most likely to want to see relatively recent ones. To start the listing from the 1st day of the course is not the right thing.

"To start the listing from the 1st day of the course is not the right thing." - but only if you're using this course format as was originally intended by José!
- I think you'll find that a paginated format like this one will have a lot of interest from people who are intending to use it in many other ways... I guess we're asking if it would be possible to add these options so that it becomes even more flexible. Some good user-centered-design additions might be a 'display oldest first' option (as in the Moodle forums) and an option to set the number of items per page.
btw. The reason the reversal feels wrong (i.e. showing the highest numbered topic first) is because the pagination display shows: Page: 1 2 3 4 5 6 (Next)
-> it counts up in the opposite direction (lowest to highest), which is counter intuitive for a user who would expect Page 6 to take them to the last item in the course (because that's what we've become used to in most web forums)
Similarly, the format not saving the last viewed state is counter-intuitive because that's what a Moodle user has become accustomed to. UI design is about working with users' expectations (and pre-knowledge) not against them. Maybe you could add a 'Current topic' button (similar to Google Calendar's 'Today' link)
