JCross German Charset Problem

Using Hotpotatoes 6.2.5.5 JCroos

After building an JCross-application it is shown with correct german charset in the built-in preview windows.
Aft upload to the moodle-server and starting it there, all german umlauts (mutated vowels) like äöü are shown as follows:

Wie hei#x00DF;t es richtig?

Kreuzwortr#x00E4;tsel

Iam using german language files.
Knows somebody help.

Just guessing here, but I wonder if the "Language Autodetect " setting is enabled or disabled -- http://YOURMOODLESITE/admin/settings.php?section=langsettings . Maybe that's the problem.

Your database has already been converted to unicode, has it not? Perhaps the problem lies there. -- http://docs.moodle.org/en/admin/environment/unicode

In poking around the configuration file, I came across the following:

// Allow unicode characters in uploaded files, generated reports, etc.

Maybe the solution to your problem is to uncomment that setting. I would be nervous about doing so on my site, though. I would certainly make a backup of the site before changing that setting.

thanks for researching the information about unicode files names.

In Frank's case, it seems to be the file content not the file name that is being mangled.

FYI, Hot Potatoes source files are XML files with ascii encoding. All non-ascii characters are encoded as HTML entities. This ingenious system allowed Hot Potatoes to operate across multiple operating systems at the dawn of the unicode era when operating systems and browsers commonly had a different encoding for each language. The result is that HP files are sort of unicode, but they can be treated as ascii by the operating system.

I had a similar probem and Gordon Bateson solved it as follows. Please note the link to the issue at MDL-17136, which fully explains the issue I had. It may be similar to yours.

...the cause of the problem is on your server. I strongly suspect that your PHP needs to be recompiled to use a different libxml module. I have you are not familiar with servers that probably sounds like techno-babble, in which case you will need to talk to the server administrator or the help desk of your hosting site and ask them to help you.

I agree with Rosemary.

The ampersands have been removed from the HTML entities which strongly suggests the PHP on your server has a faulty libxml module.

For the same reason, backups and restores will probably fail on your Moodle site, so you should talk to your server administrator and ask him/her to recompile PHP or upgrade to the latest version.

I would like to encourage people to visit MDL-17136 and vote for it to be fixed, so that we can help folks like Frank understand more easily what the problem is and what needs to be done to solve it.
