Complete Teacher's Information Management System

Complete Teacher's Information Management System

Hi,

I like Moodle Gradebook, but that's just what it is (only) a gradebook. Grades are a small part of what a working classroom teacher must track.

I am looking for a Teacher's Information Management System (see below). Are you also looking for the same type of system? Are other people trying to get such a system into Moodle? I'm quite surprised that there is such a gap (looking to be filled) between the gradebook and the school-management-package.

I would like a more complete database, a Teacher's Information System which includes tables such as:
key school staff (with contact information)
homerooms (and homeroom teachers)
learning disabilities (and accomodations)
parent/guardian
family (I saw a students/guardians/families done with CiviCRM)

This would be a database with a number of one to many relationships, and even some (ugh) many to many relationships:
one homeroom to many students
one student to many courses
one family to many students
one family to many parents/guardians
one student to many learning disabilities
etc.

My biggest focus would be on a teacher who teaches at two or more schools, or a Subject coordinator such as the head math teacher who must track 5 or 6 teachers, and their students. I would limit the information to one academic year.

So far I've found online gradebooks (e.g. Moodle Gradebook) or very large programs used to manage an entire school (e.g. http://www.renweb.com/). The schools I work in use such programs but usually they are for management only, not for teachers. We just submit grades. Teacher's P.E.T. is pretty good but not good enough.

I've tried building this in Access, but did not succeed. I'm learning PHP and MySQL now, but still it may be beyond my ability.

openadmin is a great product and it's developer very helpful. It interfaces with the regional authority via XML and is probably the most superior of the options available (and no hype or code disputes). As I recall, it is written in perl, which might be astrike against it for someone looking to stick with php and it didn't offer a development community, an issue for larger districts apparently (so claim consultants for Great City districts). Some discussion can be found at http://asdtech.wik.is where a budget review team considered the Anchorage School District's decision to invest in zangle without looking at open software solutions.

I'm the lead developer for CiviCRM (http://civicrm.org) and currently have 2 kids (kindergarden and pre-K) in a San Francisco school. I'm getting more interested in addressing and building school software and would love to see CiviCRM address and attack these issues (i.e. teacher information management system etc).

If folks are interested in pursuing this, please start a discussion on the CiviCRM forums on the feature request board: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/board,18.0.html

I do think CiviCRM has quite a few of the pieces needed for this. Its missing a few others and I suspect we can start building the missing pieces together smile

Hi Tom! as you recognise, Moodle is not an end-to-end student information management system. it is, however, a wonderful learning management system that is most things, to most users, most of the time! it is an excellent piece of software, by any measure, open-source or commercial.

feel free to suggest feature improvements over at Moodle Tracker...

http://tracker.moodle.org

i suggest you investigate the plugins database - there may be 3rd party contributed modules that can achieve some of the things you have in mind. be certain to test in a development environment before committing contrib code to a production site.

you shld also try the mentees block and moodle networking function. understanding these features will assist you with some of the '1-to-many relationships' and 'teacher who teaches at two schools' scenarios, respectively.

alternatively, if you, your organisation has a spare $100K+, i recommend you check out the Micro$oft Learning Gateway! evil

Cheers, Chad
