Submitting Multiple Choice Answers

Submitting Multiple Choice Answers

I am currently creating a moodle site. I tried searching but was unsure how to even search for what I want, here it is.

I just handed out in class a packet where students put answers for multiple choice questions they already have in a review book.  Normally I collect these and try my best to mark them overnight.  Here is what I am wondering if Moodle can do for my students as well as for me.

Is there a way in quiz module that I could just list question number and then the four possible answers. Students could check off the answers and then submit it to me where moodle would grade it.

Possible?

Here is what I am looking for. Students have even questions do this Friday.

2.  __1  __2  __3  __4

4.  __1  __2  __3  __4

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I do not know which version of Moodle I have it is through a school server. I was told it was the newest one but I will get more details tomorrow.

Hi Adam,
You could do that as a quick & dirty (well, maybe not so quick, but certainly dirty) quiz activity.

You just go into quiz and create the questions, following the instructions in quiz documentation for multiple choice questions.

But, jumping precipitously into a quiz is the least useful way to do a Moodle quiz. Moodle is much more than a Scantron form, and when you have students transfer from paper to the quiz activity their work, you essentially double their work for not much informational gain on your own work.

Better to create the quiz in whole form using the multiple choice quiz question tool than to just make it

2. __1 __2 __3 __4

Moodle is a really good tool. And it will ease your grading life, but you can't just throw students into it. You need to know what it does and doesn't do before you push students to use it. Else, you will not have buy-in.

Thanks for your quick reply.  I have tried with some success the quiz activity idea that you have suggested.

I plan to use the upcoming summer to create multiple choice activities and upload the graphics that are involved in the questions so that I can use moodle much more efficiently on my end as well as on the student end.

Right now my goal was to try and use it to provide quick feedback to the students so we could practice as much as possible before our state exam.

Thank you again for the idea

Hi Adam. I have been in a similar situation, and was searching for a solution on this forum a few months back. In my case the questions/answer choices were already in a textbook. I wasn't sure about copyright issues and also did not want to retype everything. (Ben I agree that Moodle offers MUCH more than this, but using Moodle quiz as a scantron also has its place I feel.)

The solution I found worked pretty well, using the Aiken format. If you're not familiar, don't worry it's a breeze.

Basically you type out your questions in a text file (using notepad for example). The following is what I believe it should be like in your case:
Q: 02
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
ANSWER: A

Q: 04
A. 1
B. 2
C. 3
D. 4
ANSWER: B

Then, you can import all the questions into Moodle that you would like to use. Each batch of questions should be its own category, since the question names (i.e. Q#1) will be reused. Make sure to set the option of scattering answer choices and questions OFF in the quiz settings. I have made this video which is a guide to using the Aiken format. Just replace the text as stated above. Here is the video link:

The only downside is that you mentioned wanting to give feedback. If you want specific feedback on questions, you will have to look elsewhere- for example manually creating questions in the Moodle interface, or using the GIFT format. On the other hand, you can still manually provide feedback to the student after the quiz is taken in the grade book.

Hope that helps, good luck!
