Jon - You can do this one of two ways;

1 - Edit the quiz and set the Open and Close date and time by clicking on your Quizzes link, click on the name of the quiz, click "Update this quiz" and scroll down to the "Timing" section.

2 - From the courses front page, click the "Turn editing on" button, and click the eye (the hide icon) next to the quiz so that the eye is closed. Then click the "Turn editing off" button. When you want the class to take the quiz reverse the action.

thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately there is no time limit. Students will be taking the lesson when ever they gab a chance through out the year. We will need to know if they pass with in a day or so of them passing.

Any more ideas welcome

It sounds to me like you're asking about conditional activities. For each student, they can see the lesson, and when they complete the lesson, they can then see the quiz. I believe this is coming in version 2.0. See this post in the MoodleMan blog for a preview. It has a nice screencast demonstrating how this will potentially work. There is also a forum on moodle.org for discussing this feature.

Thanks for the reply

Yes John you hit the nail right on the head. I don't think I can wait for the release of Moodle 2.0.

Is there a recommended work around?

Jon

This isn't my idea (I saw it in another thread), but another possible workaround (more portable?) is to password protect the quiz (optional quiz setting). You can include the password in the general feedback for the required lesson module, or perhaps as an element on the final page of the lesson. You probably also want to label the quiz to indicate that the lesson needs to be completed first.

It doesn't stop people from sharing the password (once one person finishes the lesson), but it might get you close to what you want without having to install a major patch (not my idea of a fun project, especially when the next upgrade comes around).
