I want to share an architecture diagram with you which may help you to understand a single question type in a quiz more easily. It may support a better understanding if you plan to develop a new question type plugin.
Vertically the diagram is separated by the different paths in moodle. If you are using the question type template the part you will be working on will be the last two columns.
