Back to basics, the new Version 4 (beta1) of the Alternatives Theme Set. Inspired by BBC Online and MTV.com

Default  Cropcircles

Two versions have been added to the theme section, default and crop circles.

NEW FEATURES

  • Totally new menu system based on the MTV.com navigation menu. It's larger, more clear and more professional.
  • New style for side blocks, forum blocks and general boxes inspired by BBC Online.
  • Default has crisp lines and is more pleasing to the eye.
  • General tidy up of style to give a cleaner, more professional look.

KNOWN BUGS

  • Hot Potatoes activities make the interface look funny. Not unreadable, just funny.
  • Bound to be some more, please post to the forums if you find any (with solutions if possible).

OK, so turns out that until they're authorised the download links won't work. So until such time here are the direct links...

Default v4

Crop Circles v4

(PS how comes when I don't login on moodle.org everything's in spanish even if I change it? Doesn't really matter as I can speak Spanish but still, it's odd.)

The grade book is hard to read... not impossible, just hard. from a student's perspective it works out fine as their grade is presented to them in an itemized format. However whenever a teacher is looking at the entire class it is somewhat confusing

Any solutions?

I have had reports from our users that the dropdown menu does not work on I.E 6 or Firefox. But works perfect on I.E 7

maybe i messed up putting our links in.

I think i will revert to the original menubar.php that came with the download and see if that helps.

Ok what i can figure out.

It works in Firefox

It works in I.E 7

it does not work in I.E6, the drop down menus do not appear when moving over the sections.

I uploaded the default from the Moodle Theme's database to see if it was something that I had messed up, but it does the same.

Anyone offer any solutions, or should i revert to my previous theme.

Damn that's a bit of a bugger, I don't have IE6 to test it on, but if anyone can find a way to make it IE6 compatible that would be great. Meanwhile I'll see if I can investigate.

Hi Shaun,

the dropdown menu works in Firefox 3, but in IE7 is not fixed. If I resize the page the menu moves.

For me the same thing happens on your website, the drop menu is not fixed in IE7.

Now I am searching to fix it

Cool. I don't seem to have any problems with IE7 but it is an awful browser with many unexplained things.

The javascript required for IE6 compatibility is in a folder called JS within the theme but I don't think it's been properly included in my header.html

Also I have found this....

http://www.alistapart.com/articles/dropdowns

but it will need implimenting. If I get time I will do my best to have a go, if someone else has the time, I'd be very grateful.

The menu system used is from lwis...

Re: Alternatives (Newbury College Theme Set) V4b1 RELEASED

Right... I've found what's causing the IE6 (and maybe some of the IE7 problems). There is a file in the JS folder called CSSHOVER.css which needs including somehow. like

{ behavior:url("csshover.htc"); }

But I don't know how to do it.

I have reverted to the previous themes due to a few people having a moan.

I wonder what would happen if i tried the menubar.php from the old themes to the new theme.... may try this tomorrow.

Shaun

Following on from your post, I had a look around the web and found this;

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum83/5432.htm

I looked at the 2nd with the source code, so tried to add the files to header.html or menubar.php

no avail, i even tried to add the "body {behavior:url("csshover.htc");}" into the Styles_ie6.css file , but even that didnt work.

Re: Alternatives (Newbury College Theme Set) V4b1 RELEASED

Try adding this to styles_variable.css

body {
  background: #013f61 url('images/bkg_body.jpg') repeat-x center top;
  behavior:url('js/csshover.htc');
  border-color:#ffffff;
  width: 960px;
  margin-left: auto;
  margin-top: 0px;
  margin-right: auto;
  margin-bottom: 0px;
}

I can't test it with IE6 I'm afraid as we don't have any machine still running it here, but let me know if it works.

I am just installing Virtual PC and a free Image that includes IE6 for testing from Microsoft (30 day trial of XP SP3) so I dont have to keep nipping out to classrooms etc

I have downloaded the free Microsoft Virtual and then the free XP image with IE.6 built in (limited to 30 days), to try out

and it still does not work.

I have put the old theme's back on and will look again come July when we migrate our entire college LAN from Novell to Windows.

I've been reading your thread and hoped that you might have found a fix for IE6.  It works great for me in Firefox and IE7 but not IE6.  Since we have not migrated to IE7 (waiting for IE8) this is a show stopper.  I played with the csshover.htc but couldn't get that to work.

Hope someone comes up with a solution and posts it for the rest of us.

Now the menu seems work in IE 6, works fine in firefox but the menubar float always in IE7. It's a css problem, but I can't fix it.

Hi Seldon

Could you possibly send me your theme?

johns@bsfc.ac.uk

just to see if it is something that I have done with our menu system.

I still cant get it to work on I.E 6 - does it work for you?

Hi John

Now I'll send you  my files, Sorry, but they are not well organised
the  DIV for the menubar doesn't work well in IE7. It would be necessary to fix it (position:fixed), but in this way the navbar disappears
I hope this helps

First, thanks for a great theme. It's one of the best I've seen available for free!

I just noticed this in header.html:

<div id="page">
<div id="page">
<div id="page">

Is that duplication intentional?

no, probably a mistake, I'll check it out on monday and correct it for v4b3. in the meantime it appears to function fine, so it's more of a housekeeping thing than anything else.

hi shaun!

i solved my problem

The theme just had one icon file in the scorm scorm directory (under moodel/theme/<them-name>/pix/mod/scorm), I simply copied the scorm directory from another theme and that fixed the icon issues.

i hope you give me nice icon pix....for your damn good themes!

thanks a lot

Any luck with the gradebook stretching problem? I've been trying to fix it to make it look more use friendly for teachers. Looks fine for students

Re: Alternatives (Newbury College Theme Set) V4b1 RELEASED

Another interesting side affect of this theme is you can't highlight a student's line of grades by clicking on the name.  Any one else know how I can add that functionality back to my site?

And now that I'm really looking at the grading, when I look at the grading page in IE (6 and 7), I am getting error on the page and the Choose an action... jump menu will not work.  I'm using the Chrome menu instead of the menubar that came with the theme.  It works fine in FireFox.

Did you find a fix for the gradebook problem - I'm using firefox and the when teacher's view the gradebook you have to scroll a long way to the right of the page.
