Interests, Tags & links to profiles

Interests, Tags & links to profiles

We have enabled site-wide use of interests/tags. When a user clicks on the tag they are able to see a list of other users who have the same 'interest'. However it's not then possible to click thru' to the profiles of the other users.

When I'm logged in as an Admin I can click thru. Is there a setting i'm missing so that students & teachers can click thru to profiles from tag pages?

Thanks,
Matt

Users are normally prevented from viewing other user's profiles when outside the course context (e.g. from the front page or tags page). Assuming your default site role is Authenticated user, and you want to enable viewing profiles site-wide, you can modify the Authenticated user role - set moodle/user:viewdetails to Allow.

I have the following problem, or better me as the administrator not, but all mey students:

my students told me that they aren’t able to modify their profile, for example to insert a new password or their photo. This is very strange because last year my students inserted their photos without problems and I haven’t modified since than the parameters of my site (now I have moodle Moodle 1.9 + (Build: 20080328)). I've tried to login as a student and they are right: they only see the smily, their name, and the city they come from but can't modify the fields.

I’ve tried to enter in "users" and to permit for example that users modify their profile, but nothing changes.

What am I doing wrong?

Are there some parameters that I have to change?

Hope you can solve my small problem.

Thanks.

Paola

Have you checked in site admin>security>site policies and scrolled down to the bottom that the ability for users to change profile images is enabled?

Hello

A different but associated (according to the title) question....

Why are interests and tags the same thing?

imho - they are not the same and shouldn't be treated the same. For a secondary school with lovely, lively students with they wide and varied interests, which they inevitably label in completely different ways for example, I love football v. I play football.

Please can these interests be separated from tags?

Thanks.

Hi Mandy. I understand your point. School-age learners have a tendency to add long phrased interests in their user profile, not single words.

In answer to your question: Why are interests and tags the same thing?

Interests added to a user profile are effectively tags. A tag associates users who share that common interest. These users are brought together on the Tags page for that particular interest.

Blog entries tagged by that interest are also populated on this Tag page. RSS, Youtube and flickr feeds for this tag can also be added. It can very quickly become a social page. This is designed to be a good thing for learning.

Here's a good example @ http://moodle.org/tag/index.php?tag=moodle

Note: if you'd prefer to disassociate interests and tags, the tag functionality can be disabled by admin.

Cheers, Chad
