I've installed Moodle 1.8.6.20080716 and I can't see where on my server my uploaded files (and backups) are stored. I assumed that it would be in moodledata in the root dir but there's nothing there. I've spent ages searching through the various directories in my installation but can't find them. I know that there are files there because I've uploaded them and they are accessible from within Moodle but I can't see them using cpanel or an FTP client.
Any ideas?

Uploaded files are in the moodledata directory. That directory location is defined in the moodle/config.php file - look for the $CFG->dataroot variable.
Within your moodledata directory, there should be numbered subfolders. Those numbers correspond with the course ids (navigate to a course and then look at the id number at the end of the url in the address bar). Within a numbered subfolder are the files that have been uploaded to that course.
