In the category containing the extra credit grade item, the "Sum of grades" aggregation strategy should be used. Edit the grade item. Show Advanced field. Check "Extra credit". Read help file for more info.

The current 1.9 gradebook only supports extra credit in the SUM aggregation method.

If you do not want to wait for the LSU Simple Gradebook, then you can create sum categories within the main course category.

Within these sum categories you can create a single other category for grade items to be aggregated in and drop in the extra credit item beside this category within the SUM category.

This, in effect, will allow you to add extra credit to any aggregation method. It's a pain, but it works.

The LSU Simple Gradebook (some Moodlers outside of LSU are testing it now, and LSU has several thousand classes using it now) allows for extra credit in its 3 supported aggregation methods (SUM, Simple Weighted Mean, and Weighted Mean). It also supports grades above the maximum and percents above 100.

I have the same question? Can we get this LSU simple gradebook module? Does anyone know what the timeline is for availability?

Tom, our gradebook installation is a little tough right now. Please see http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-738 and try it out.

BE AWARE that this system makes some fundamental changes to the way Moodle core functions and you CANNOT use both our and Moodle's grade-book simultaneously.

Also I would be careful when installing this on a live system as we copy all manual items finalgrade to rawgrade during the install process in order to support curve-to across the board. Without this change, manual items grades would disappear.

Also if converting a live system to this, please be aware that calculations are not supported (we still adhere to them, but you cannot change ones that have been created) it might be best to roll this out between semesters and URGE instructors to re-create their gradebooks in the new system instead of restoring from backups.

You can email me with any questions or post them to the forum.

I've installed your system on my Moodle, and the installations seemed to go smoothly. We'll see how it goes operationally next quarter. Preliminary inspection looks very promising. My principle reason for wanting it is its accommodation of extra credit above 100% -- the last quarter using bare 1.9.2 was very painful.

I've kept my Moodle install at 1.9.2, since the tracker discussion indicates that it is tied to that version. It might work fine under 1.9.3, but I wasn't sure. Is there going to have to be an updated version of Simple Grader for newer point versions of Moodle? When the time comes to upgrade Moodle, will we have to do something special to accommodate the database changes introduced with Simple Grader?

We have begun testing for 1.9.3 and everything seems ok so far (this is not a recommendation to use it in 1.9.3).

We will finish testing and give definitive instructions when we get back after the holidays.

We plan on releasing a new update some new features (category quick edit, and item quick edit screens) today in contrib. It should be up by the end of the day.

Our major Moodle upgrade schedule is once a year, so our gradebook will be made to work with whatever version of Moodle is current in July.

We update our code (blocks, plugins, gradebook, etc.) every Thursday. Our gradebook commits to contrib "should" occur on a monthly basis. Now...if only timelines worked as they should.

Do you plan to post a zip file, or should we just pull from CVS? And if we pull from CVS, how do we go about doing that? 微笑

apologies- i know your instructions are perfectly clear, but i am having a difficult time figuring out how to impliment them. if we have a course using simple weighted or weighted mean, how do we do this?

do we set up a sum category as a sub-category within one of the other course categories?

sorry, i'm having such a difficult time with this! mb

I think I have followed along with the discussion, but is there a way to present a meaningful grade to students when using extra credit?  If I use SUM aggregation, then they get a number that is difficult for them to interpret and I have to calculate averages using Excel.  If I try to put in a calculation so that averages are used, I can't include the extra credit (I don't see any way to calculate the denominator without including the extra credit).

Can anyone help with this problem?  Is there a way to include extra credit in the course total calculation?  My students are complaining that their grades look too low.

Thank you.

After reading the posts and trying this in my class, I am still unsure of how to add extra credit to an assignment.

How do I give a student a 35 out of 32 for an assignment?

We are running: Moodle 1.9.2 (Build: 20080711)

I do have the ability to do "Mean of Grades (with extra credits)" under the category aggregation method. Is this where I want to be?

Thanks

The most involved way to get the functionality you ask for is to implement the LSU_gradebook patch from Moodle CVS, but this involves changing the entire gradebook and the inevitable unpatching/repatching (pain in the butt) to upgrade.

My only suggestion is a rough one used only to include a "extra credit" assignment when you are calculating a total % score:

1. Put everything in a single, new category, eg. sumtotal that gets "sum of grades", including any extra credit columns. So let's say the max points is 700 but with 10pts extra credit it's 710.

2. Make a new item that divides the total of Sum Points Total by the actual max pts: =(sumtotal/700)

3. Based your letter grade column on that new %.

Not perfect, and a little bit of a pain, but it might be better than nothing.

I don't know much about the actual grading requirements you have, but wouldn't it be possible to use a different method altogether? What if you set your maximum grades to the "Real maximum" you expect them to have, and use a "Provisional maximum" to grade these activities? Currently Moodle doesn't let you select a provisional maximum, so you'd have to tell your teachers what it is so they can use it as a limit. Then you could use whatever margin there is between this provisional maximum and the Real maximum as extra credit.

Is this not a viable solution?

Hi,
I'm setting up my gradebook in moodle 1.9. I use a simple "point system" (grade is based on points earned divided by possible pts). But, I also allow students to earn bonus points. I don't want the bonus points to be part of the possible points. So, for example, if so far we've had two 10 point quizzes, and a student earned grades of 8 and 7, but also got 1 bonus pt, the grade would be (8 + 7 + 1)/20 instead of (8+7+1)/21. The students bonus points are accrued throughout the semester, and, again, I don't want them to be part of the "denominator" when calculating the grade.   I have to use the "simple weighted mean" method, but I understand that only the sum of grades method will allow for bonus points.   I read Robert's explanation of how to allow extra credit for any aggregation method, but have tried it and am not succeeding.  If more detail could be supplied, that would be great.

Right now, I have items in the main course category, using the "simple weighted mean aggregation"  and I am confused about how to add the folders to allow for bonus points in a separate category.   Any more detailed explanations would be so helpful to me.

thanks

Patti

Hi Patti,

to add sub-folders or "categories" -

From the "Choose an action" dropdown menu in the gradeboook, select "Categories and items"
then click on "Add category"

and you'll notice you can set up sub-categories - each with their own aggregation method. So you can add a category and have it use the "sum of grades" aggregation type.

But how to get all the other settings right is the big question... this is what I tried and it didn't work:

Overall course aggregation: sum of grades
Aggregate including sub-categories: checked Yes

Sub category set up: name: SUM EC
Aggregation: sum of grades
Aggregation coefficient: 20.000 ?

Added a manual item called "Assignment 1 EC" with maximum 20, minimum 0, grade to pass 0, Extra Credit box checked Yes

But when I got to Category total settings for the SUM EC category, the maximum/minimum grade is set to 0 and not changeable.

So even if I put the extra 20 points in the Assignment 1 EC column, the SUM EC category total stays at 0.

And I get nothing in the Course total, so it's not aggregating anything (even though I filled in grades for all the other assignments.

best,
clark

Clark,

I tried that to (or something very similar) and for the sum category total it has the range set from 0 - 0 and will not allow me to change the maximum grade to anything except zero, and the same goes for the course total.

I am trying to use MEAN OF GRADES WITH EXTRA CREDIT. I cannot get the calculation to check out.  I do not want to use SUM because I have weighted categories. I have attached a screen shot. I know I have done something wrong but cannot figure out what that might be. Thank you.
