I just did something I've been wanting to do for a very long time - I fixed up the forum display:
eg http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?f=32
I hope you find it a lot more usable, especially for large forums (like the ones in this course, for example).
Note the new "last post" date. On old discussions this defaults to being the same as the date of the discussion starter, but any new posts to a discussion will change this date, and "bump" the discussion up to the top of the forum display.

The new forum display is great. The "hide" option is also a great feature.
the side effect on this is that when looking from outside you have NO idea if the thread is something new or not.
giving all the (sort) credit to the last post, and nothing to the topic is misleading and confusing, IMO.
