Non-roman characters in OUWiki

I just installed OUWiki (Moodle 1.9) and made a test page with a few Chinese characters and their pinyin transliterations (e.g. 好 hǎo).

Both the Chinese character and the roman letter a with caron/hacek turned into question marks when the page was saved.

I'm using Unicode, of course, as the encoding for both and have no problems with such things in the old wiki (or anywhere else in Moodle so far).

Am I missing a setting or something?

Thanks!
