Daily Format

Hello, fellow Moodlers,

Has anyone proposed a daily (as opposed to weekly) course format? We have several teachers who might be interested in this type of course structure for staff development of mini-courses lasting only two or three weeks.

Thanks,
Art

Hi Art!

Check this out.
return of the subsection: testing wanted
http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=10357

I was thinking of using this to breakdown lessons on a daily basis, if it can do that. Then I saw yorr post. [I have not installed the new version yet. Will do so later today.] A daily format would also be nice along with a monthly format. I think some tachers might like that format more for various reasons to include, that it is really how they organize their lessons - daily/monthly - Not weekly or by topic (specifically). It just adds to the customability of Moodle and makes it more flexible than the other educational online software out there. I do not know if it takes a lot of coding to do.

I taught an online course once and I used a biweekly format. The first week was for perusing te materials and the second week for discussion of that topic. Perhaps the weekly format could be reworked as a time periods format where teachers are allowed to specify the blocks of time?

Hi Martin!

Is there a way the following could be chosen by using a checkbox on the course "Settings" page if the "Topics" Format is chosen and then displayed automatically on the course page? The dates for the settings would be determined by the beginning date.

  • "Daily" dates [for example, Thursday January 1, 2004, Friday January 2, 2004],
  • Option to add or remove weekend dates (on "daily" dates).
  • "Monthly" dates [for example Jan, Feb or Jan-Feb].

Daily format. Great idea. It would help to focus my learners.

I run short, two week long, courses. And I want to force (encourage) my learners to work on one topic before moving to the next one. A daily (as opposed to weekly) format would help me do this.

Martin, using topics is fine. But with topics I can't see how you'd stop learners from looking ahead, instead of focusing on today's tasks. My learners tend to skim through course topics and cherry-pick the easy ones while avoiding the high workload activities. And by the way, I don't overload them with work. It's just their learning preference.

Setting daily targets would be great on short courses as it would encourage good time management. In the end, this would help to keep my learners motivated.

If I can make 'topics' work this way, please let me know how. Is there some way to hide topics on a daily basis. ?? Using the calendar, maybe?

Maybe the "course program" block (one of the marvellous add ons by the CDC team) could do the trick for you.
Check it out at http://cdc.humboldt.edu/moodle/

Or you could use the indent options of Moodle in the sections (choose: Topics):

  • Make a top entry with the formulated target (You can include the date)
    • indent the next one for example resource A
    • the same for resource B
    • then the main activity
      • you could indent again for a sub target
        • resource C
        • resource D
        • then the sub activity..etc
  • next main target (in your case next day?)
    • resource E
    • resource F
    • main activity 2.. etc

(use a section for each week? then you could use weeks as format...)

Hi Moodlers,
I've just managed to create a new course format (named Daily format)!

So u dont have to do anything just unzip the attached file and put the content files in the appropriate path.

Ex.:

1) Place the Day file on this path \course\format just drop it in the format directory, therefore you will have eventually 4 types of format 1.Days 2. Social 3. Topics 4. Weeks formats,

2) PlaceThe content of enar(if u have Arabic version) file on \lang directory.

Thats all folks!wink

Please let me know what you think about this type of format.approve

Is this a 1.4.x format only?  I tried it in my 1.5.x install and it errors out when it calls block_have_active() .

We made a new one that works( looks like it so far!). It was a simple tweak but will satisfy the need for a daily format. We will have a chance to test fully in near future, but any imputs will be appreciated.

Just unzip it under course/format

Hi Everyone!

Anna, thank you for the images.

My mind is "bubbling" now.  I wonder what a week/topic course format would look like with sub-tabs within each week/topic representing days/sub-topics [with the ability to display dates].

I really like all these different course formats that are popping up.  They are closer to how Teachers (especially in secondary school) arrange their teaching.

..or start with 3 sections as weeks or topics, then 5 sections as project format (tabs) end ending with one week in daily format...
