I have a student who took a quiz (essay) but for the "Time Taken" category, it shows "Open". He did not complete all of the answers, but neither did many of the students. Everyone else shows how much time was taken on the quiz. I am not able to grade this student's quiz. Any ideas what it means by "open" and how can I grade what the student has completed?
This is a problem that I have encounterd a number of times with quizzes. Students complete a quiz and then click on 'Submit all and finish', but in the results page they are recorded as being open. This has lead to a few indignant notes from parents but there doesn't seem to be any clear reason for it.
You should be able to log in as the student and submit the quiz for him/her and then the quiz will be available for grading. If the quiz has a close time you may need to disable it to do the submission on behalf and enable the close time again afterwards (just to prevent reattempts).
Sometimes students forget or simply don't submit but still complain (even in university level!)
The "open" status means that something happened that prevented the successful submission of a quiz. Most of the time when this happens, the student lost connection to the Internet while taking the quiz, or closed the browser, or navigated away.
Depending on how your quiz is set up, it should be a simple matter of the student clicking on "Continue attempt" and submitting the quiz, making sure the quiz submits before navigating anywhere else.
A quick way to check this would be to check the logs for that student to see if they submitted the quiz. The typical entry would have a sequence with the following:
We get this question a lot ourselves ;)

Hi Folks,
This is an old thread but since this still seems to be a problem I'm providing a link to why I think it happens and how to resolve it:
