It counts all assignments and other activities against the student until a grade is entered. That is why I don't use it. I just count graded items and enter zero for activities that are past due (unless there is a valid reason) as part of my normally grading process. You can also enter a comment that says "please submit something for credit" which normally prompts students to get something in even if there is a valid reason.
