I'm leaving here some numbers about Moodle in schools in Portugal. Just numbers, they don't reflect quality of use as you might imagine (and I would love to give some data on that).

I used the following methods to gather this data on June 12 2008:
  1. CRIE's Website (Schools' Moodle directory) - CRIE was a taskforce from the Ministry of education for ICT in education. It was "terminated" some days ago, and finantialy limited an year or so ago. The Centros de Competência are a network of centers around the country gathering universities and other institutions to help schools in the use of ICT
  2. Google search for Centros de competência websites
  3. Centros de Competência website search
  4. Link count, no checking if the Moodles were up
  5. Classification by institution tipology defined by the text on the link. The types are:
  • A – "Group schools" (schools from several levels gathered)
  • EBI - "Primary schools < year 5"
  • EB23 - "Primary schools, years 5-9)
  • ES – "Secondary schools" (that can also have years 5-9)
  • C – Private school
  • CF – Teacher training center
  • EP – Vocational school
  • O - Others
  1. For CCEMS (Centro de Competência Entre Mar e Serra) and FCCN (Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional - National Scientific Computation Foundation) the classification by type was not made, due to the gihg number of installations.
  2. Installation duplications were not verified
  3. The webpages from where the data was are not guaranteed to be up to date.
  4. Only individual school installations were considered (so several schools in one Moodle installation were not)
  5. You can of course have independent Moodle installations on intranets, hosting services, that were not considered here
Data on moodle in Portugal

Number and % of Moodle installations by Centros de Competência (CC) and institution type. (* Note: partial totals incomplete for the defined types due to the lack of specific data from CCEMS)

The total of Moodle installations was 741.

Adding to the table above, FCCN offered Moodle installations to 426 escolas in June 12 2008.

Just for you to have an idea of the portuguese school system, we have 457 secondary schools, 1.150.000 students in primary school and 350.000 in secondary. About teachers, we have aroun 82000 teaching years 7 to 12. The country population is around 10.000.000.

About Public Universities and Polytechnical institutes, I identified at least 12 Moodle installations, The links were gathered from PAOL's website and from Google searches on June 10 2008. All links were checked and the frontpage was loaded. Schools of education were not searched (inside polytechnical institutes you can have Schools of education for primary and secondary level teacher training). The institutions are:

  1. Universidade de Lisboa: http://moodle.ul.pt
  2. Universidade de Coimbra: http://moodle.uc.pt
  3. Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto-Douro: http://moodle.utad.pt
  4. Universidade do Algarve: http://www.ualg.pt/moodle
  5. Universidade de Évora: http://www.moodle.uevora.pt
  6. Universidade do Porto: http://moodle.up.pt
  7. Universidade dos Açores: http://moodle.uac.pt
  8. Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo: http://elearning.ipvc.pt
  9. Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal: http://moodle.ips.pt
  10. Instituto Politécnico de Leiria: http://moodle.ued.ipleiria.pt
  11. Instituto Politécnico de Tomar: http://www.e-learning.ipt.pt
  12. Instituto Politécnico de Santarém: http://lms.esa.ipsantarem.pt
again, no qualitative data!
I have some more data for a paper about Moodle in Portugal to Caldas Moodle 08 (the moodle moot event around here), I hope to translate it to english one of these days.
You can read part of this post in portuguese in my blog.

Hi Frances,
well, in the Centro de Competência Entre Mar e Serra looks that they are spreading the word about Moodle quite well! I believe they also started early here in Portugal offering Moodle installations to schools at no cost but I will need to check that with them.
