Have the students options to reply to posts i the News Forum been removed, or is there a problem with our installation (upgrade from 1.6.4 to 1.8.4)?
If it indeed has been removed, then that's yet another function that I have no way to find as an improvemnet of Moodle (the confusing roles and the now exhausting groups handling system being two other functions driving everyone here mad).
If it's instead a problem with our installation, has anyone please got an idea about what's gone wrong?
Best regards, PD.
I'm afraid you're going to find roles the culprit here as well. You'll need to do an override to the student role in the news forum to get that capability back. You'll have to do that a lot in forums now to get back some basic functionality.

If you migrated an existing course from 1.6 to 1.8, and the course had a News forum that allowed Students to reply, then you should not be having any problems with that forum. As far as I know, the migration script automatically adds the necessary override. However if you create a new course on 1.8 and you want Students to be able to reply in the News forum, you need to do what Steve said. You need to Allow "Reply to news" for Student in the forum context.
If you say "all I want to do in the future is what I have done in the past," then I can understand why you see roles as a burden. If you ever need flexibility, you'll discover how much you can do with roles, and you may change your opinion

You know, I keep reading that reply from people, but when I read the discussions where people are actaully trying to do something new and more powerful with roles, it doesn't seem to be working out for them that often. So, let's see if this is really the case in the real-world.

At least in our upgrade to 1.8.2 the migration script only tried to do the right overrides by allowing "replypost".
Unfortunately, you have to allow "replynews" to give students the capability to reply to a post in a news forum.

Ah ha! The automatically-added override is the wrong one, so it has no effect.
News forums use Add news and Reply to news, while non-News forums use Start new discussions and Reply to posts.
News forums use Add news and Reply to news, while non-News forums use Start new discussions and Reply to posts.
Thanks for all answers!
Yeah, I can see the good things about the roles system, I was a bit too quick to complain here - we have over 4500 people in our system, and that function was something I hadn't tried before upgrading so it was kind of a suprise when a lot of students suddenly complained about the new restrictions
Anyway, I changed the global rights so that all students can write replies in the Newsforum as before, and that works just fine.
Here we do find that quite useful, since there's not seldom follow-up questions regarding what the teachers announce.
All the best,
PD
